Public unions (well all unions, but especially public) are a plague on this country.
They need to be eradicated.

What is the sense in public unions? You're being paid by THE GOVERNMENT.
Its basically a monopoly that has no profit motive because it makes no profit, it just taxes more money the more the unions squeezes the government and that tax money comes from us. Its quite disgusting.

And yet in parts of the country ruled by the Republican/Corporate elite where if there is a teachers union its got about enough power to maybe blow its nose our kids still ain't learning.

In Europe teachers unions make the US teachers unions look like pansies.

But European kids are kicking our kids asses in education.

But, all Republicans care about is using the teachers unions as scapegoats. And making sure kids don't learn, or else they might see thru the Republicans b.s.

Thank You, Techs - For turning yet another thread into an opportunity to spew against Republicans. It's as tiresome as it is predictable.

It's the Tech blitzkrieg before the November elections.

Hmmm, another James O'Keefe project.

Veritas Visuals is now targeting unions in New Jersey?

This is the definition of a target rich environment.

I'm teaching college classes that many secondary education major students have to take and I will say I do not want about half of them anywhere near my kid. Their incompetency for the subjects they will have to teach someday is astounding. The only thing that gets them that "C" for a passing grade is their consistence in attendance and by barely making a passing grade on each exam. There are good education major students out there but they are certainly not a majority. I just don't see how a mediocre student will turn into an excellent educator down the road; can't teach something that one can barely comprehend.

James O'Keefe is an imbecile, and has once again missed the mark. Are we supposed to be scandalized that members of a teacher's union had a few drinks and made some off-color remarks? I would guess that the 99.9% of the footage he took and didn't use was as boring as a teacher's union conference sounds.

Uh you could always make the class harder in order to fail some of them.

I had a few classes in college where the course material was easy. To make sure stupid people didn't pass these easy classes, the tests were made incredibly unfair. They were so long that it was basically impossible to finish. They were marked in such a way that each question had to be completely perfectly. For some of the classes, as many as 1/3 of all students failed.
Scaling the marks doesn't work because then they're just competing against each other; a class full of retards still has a bunch of retards passing on a curve. If you set a solid pass/fail line then make the tests brutal, only the smart and hard working people pass.

O'Keefe is not an imbecile, not at all. He is a classic agent provocateur that lets whomever he targets hang themselves with their own words.

Binarycow captures the crux of it. There are both competents and incompetents that go into education careers.

In a unionized environment it is much more difficult to cull out the merely incompetent.

It is no secret that the unions hate Christie as Christie wants to raise the bar. Pretty much also the reason everyone else thinks Christie walks on water.

Drunks letting loose at a convention? That's not news we can use. Changing contract language after the fact to "correct egregious issues," however, is actionable.

Tenure is great for great teachers

Tenure is bad for bad teachers

Teacher unions arent so bad, its the only check and balance you have against elected officials/ administrators who have no clue at all what they are doing from a managing and policymaking standpoint

Ive seen some poorly represented unions though and.that is.a huge tragedy/irony

I used to teach at a 4-year state university and that was how things were done. We picked out the cream of the crop and weeded out the rest who had no business of being there. My new place is a local college, the politics work a bit different.

I didn't think it was possible for you to make statements that were any more clueless than those of the past, but you lower the bar daily.

I think it should be harder to be a teacher, but sadly there is too much demand so its extremely easy to be one. Unfortunately, if we only had a select few elite teachers or school system, many americans would simply opt out or.not qualify to be educated.

The biggest problem is in the area of how to efficiently get rid of bad teachers and administrators but at the same time maintain and recruit top notch teaching talent.

Unions at least offer some protection, and unless you are a complete fool, you should have no issues firing crap teachers before they get tenure, its hard.to hide crazy for.five years

Wrong. He's a dirty-trickster who acts under false pretenses (in some instances criminally) to obtain footage, then selectively edits it, often in a deliberately misleading fashion, to "prove his point." The recent Abbie Boudreau debacle pretty much says it all regarding what kind of "man" O'Keefe is - none at all. The nicest word I can come up with for O'Keefe is "liar." Some other alternatives might be "coward," "weasel," or "yellow journalist."

Yeah, he really does get under your skin if you are a liberal.

I think he is effective in about half of his videos and I think his humor is really kind of sophomoric.

He fired a blank with Boudreau but it wasn't like she herself wasn't trolling for stuff that she could use as well.

If it weren't for the revelation that the teachers' union unilaterally changed contract language after it was locked in, this video would also be a blank. That admission needs to be investigated pronto by the NJ AG.

Like I said, O'Keefe picks target rich environments. Union conventions, ACORN/SEIU offices, liberal campuses, these are places guaranteed to have people shooting off their mouths about how bad they are.

That's not really the issue. I've been just as annoyed by Michael Moore at times when he's made films I regarded as vapid and dishonest (e.g., Bowling for Columbine). O'Keefe is, at his core, dishonest, and as a huge documentary film buff I think that's about as damning a criticism as one can level at a documentarian.

I am an attorney who represents major public-sector clients in disputes with unions CONSTANTLY. I don't find it believable that a union could impose a unilateral change to an existing contract, then enforce it, even if a member of the union believed that had happened. I also have a hard time getting upset that the members of a union that the governor has vowed to crush are, well, upset with the governor.

Completely useless video that casts an untruthful picture of the teachers union. There is not one working group of people whether they are union or not who don't have people who talk and behave like this. A video of a handful of people out of the tens of thousands is nothing more than way to cast an inaccurate picture. I disagree with some things concerning teacher unions, but overall they do a good job and the last time I checked the NJ kids are among the very best taught in the country. While it may not excuse some of the draw backs, the level of complaints is a joke. Its one of the few systems that actually works.
