hello guys, this is my first post ever... so bare with me...
im planning on a new computer rig, from scratch, this includes monitors, keyboards.. etc

while i WILL be gaming, the main purpose of this rig is to do video editing, specifically final cut pro and adobe aftereffects. on top of that, there will be quite a bit of 3d integration, so i definitely want to run 3dstudio max.

my budget is around 1200 USD TOTAL i can go a bit north... but definitely under 2000

i will be buying my parts from the USA, i live about 30 minutes from Fry's and newegg shipping takes one day to get here :D

i really dont care what parts are in my rig, other than sandybridge. i also dont mind using 1333mhz ram... so thats saving money.

im not planning on using any parts i already have other than some studio monitors i have lying around... other than that, no.

i have read threads around here, however im really stuck on exactly what i want, so far im thinking a i5 2500k+ 560 ti but the i7 is tempting.. so is the 6970

i dont plan on overclocking much (stable 4.2-4.5 sandybridge?) , but i want to leave that option open if it does not destroy my budget.

my resolution is most likely going to be 1920x 1080 due to the fact that prices double once you go any higher ._. darn lcd markets.

i plan on building this rig at the last week of march into the first week of april.

i thank you all sincerely... i hope i can get some input because im stuck on what i EXACTLY want...

If you're not in a big hurry, the 1155 platform is definitely worth waiting for.
Your application might actually be one of the few where the i7-2600K is a good choice over the i5-2500K.

I agree with BoomerD. For video editing/encoding software, you'd definitely want a hyper-threaded chip. You could easily get a 2600K up to 4.5/4.7GHz with a nice low voltage for 24/7 use.

I don't know what Fry's prices are on CPUs, but I know Micro Center advertises the fact that their CPU prices are always lower than Newegg and Tiger Direct. I snagged my 2600K for $280, compared to Newegg's $329.

For a basic high-end build like this, a 650 watt PSU will be fine. You could probably get away with lower than that.

What software do you use? Some video applications actually utilize the full potential of the GPU, while others don't.

No sense in making that drive just yet. Motherboards haven't been re-released for the Sandy Bridge processors...and it doesn't look like they'll be available for at least another month. (maybe 2-3 months)

As for GPU, get the best you can afford in your build. If you do a bit of gaming, or do heavy graphics applications, you don't want to have your CPU waiting on the graphics card.
Whether you go with nVidia or ATi depends on both your personal preferences as well as the applications you use. I've read that some editing software might "play better" with one over the other.
Personally, I prefer nVidia based cards. It's always seemed like they have better drivers. (but of course, the ATI fanboi's might argue that) :p

my main tools would be pro tools 9 for audio ( i have a external sound device so no worries on a sound card) adobe aftereffects CS5 Photoshop CS5 will upgrade to CS6 when released. on top of that, 3ds max will be extensively used. if i do install hackintosh (which i most likely will) final cut pro will definately be probably the only program i'm using on osx...

I hope that you mean i7 2600K for $299. Otherwise it looks fine (though I would probably go for a WD or Samsung over a Seagate). A good mobo choice would be the GA-P67A-UD3 and Gigabyte has a good track record for Hackintosh support.

NOT SURE ABOUT THE SANDY BRIDGE SPECIFICALLY, BUT FOR ALL OTHER I7 CPUs using an X58 chipset for VIDEO EDITING -- the RAM (if DDR3 as you specs) should be in THREE STICKS -- not FOUR. Example: 3 or 6 or 12 or 24 GB RAM or there will be a performance hit. Haven't researched the Sandy Bridge boards so don't know how their RAM slots work, but for X58 chipsets with other I7's -- if a 6 slot MB, and want 12 GB -- use a 2/2/2 + 2/2/2 confi -- RAM NOT IN PAIRS for DDR3.

The X58 platform has triple channel RAM. The Sandy Bridge has double channel RAM.

uh.. you're mistaken... sandybridge uses dual channel as stated by the guy above me... im not here to ask about my components, im here to ask WHAT COMPONENTS i should get. im almost finalizing the build... what i need now is where to get the parts for cheaper XD

From your first post, it looks like you're in the USA.

That gives you a couple of good options.

First, if you're close to a MicroCenter, they have VERY good prices on CPU/motherboard combinations all the time...but they're not located everywhere, so that might not help you.

Newegg.com is one of the best of the best for parts...but their prices can occasionally be beat. Their customer service however usually CAN'T be beat.

Amazon.com is another favorite. Good prices, excellent customer service, and with Amazon Prime, (even a free 30 day trial) you get free 2-day shipping on almost everything. (be careful, not all sellers on Amazon offer free shipping...try to buy from Amazon directly when possible)

Fry's is one of the last places I'd recommend. While their prices are occasionally decent, their customer service is usually terrible...and they're well known for putting returned merchandise, even damaged/DOA merchandise back on the shelves to sell again.

Hahaha its well known that frys has pretty bad service... Decent stock of parts though. Thanks for the tip on micro center. Its a 1hr drive and im gong to be heading that direction soon anyways so im most likely going to buy it there. As for newegg... The shipping is extremely fast for me. Nevertheless ty for recommendng micro centers. Its a nice find for me.

Just remember, the P67 boards for the Sandy Bridge processors aren't available yet. Even though some rumors say early March, I don't think availability will be good at least until April or later.

I've seen that as well, but AFAIK, the boards are still not available. I checked Newegg and Amazon...no sign of any at this time.

(well, one ASUS P7P67 board on Amazon with a price of $541...and a MSRP of $250 listed...  )

Yes, but a good sign that it wont be long, maybe two weeks?
