Hi guys,

I stupidly decided to install a new video driver on my laptop last night. Since Sony doesnt per se care about its customers they dont bother releasing new drivers so I had to use the mobility moder to modify the newest catalyst driver for my laptop.

This modification caused the sound to die, with the device manager showing that the ATI HDMI Audio is disabled.

The wisdom of the internet suggested going into the BIOS and disabling the Ati soundcard from there so that my original onboard card can work but Sony BIOS seems very limited.

System restore fails.

Solutions? Delete all the drivers and re-download them from Sony? Is there another solution that doesnt cause me to revert to a video driver that is over 2 years old?

Did you try re-installing the sound driver or checking for a newer driver?

In the future, you could save yourself from this kind of headache, or any failure, such as a bad software installation, by cloning your hard drive to an external drive before you start trying to update your drivers. If the new installation fails, you could simply clone back from your backup drive to restore your previous setup.

Acronis True Image can clone Win 7 or Vista or XP. Seagate and Western Digital give free versions of True Image that are restricted in that, at least one of the drives in the chain (source or target) must be from the maker that provides the software. That means, regardless of the make of the drive in your laptop, you can use a free version if your backup drive is Seagate or WD.

I did. But to no effect.

And yes I agree, it was a foolish decision to update drivers without setting up an external backup point. :(

You could try contacting Sony's tech support. Don't know if they do much, but they may be able to help.

Good luck. :)

is it like a really old laptop that wouldn't even benefit from a driver update anyway because you could save the trouble if it was

its two yeras old. I guess my real problem is that at some point i already modified the drivers so that fallout 3 would work. and everything worked fine. So restoring the old factory drivers would be detrimental.

Now that you know what you want out of a machine, at this point, the best course may be to restore the original installation, sell it for exactly what it is to someone who needs that, and buy the one you want. :)
