hi i am building a new pc and am looking for decent card but on about up to 150$ its a q6600 go step proc
4gb corsair ram
antec neopower 650
and i have a bfg8600oc 256mb dr3 in my hp computer but i dont want to take it out for this one .what is a good noticeable step up . been looking at some 9600 or 9800 .are these a decent step up ?like pc gaming crysis ,far cry 2 flight sim etc .any recomendations? thanks alot

does anyone know how much of an performance upgrade these 2 will be compared to the 8600gt oc and whats the sweet spot for graphics memory and ddr3 or ddr2? thanks

8600 was a weak mainstream card compared to the likes of 6600 and 7600 so 4850/9800gtx will be a huge upgrade. However, since a shrink to 55nm is coming from nvidia, I'd say wait for a gtx260 deal like the $156 after rebate one that recently passed. A gtx260 will be much faster than the 4850/9800gtx.

What about 4670? I'm looking for a card in the sub $100 range. The priorities are:
1) HDCP support, DX10 support
2) quiet (passive?) cooling (55nm technology would make this more feasible, right?)
3) no legacy D-SUB
4) black PCB
I don't think I'll be playing modern games, as this card is for a Linux box, but I do want the card to be up to snuff with the latest tech. advances.

4670 is a good choice to fit those criteria.

Are there reputable manufacturers that make AMD cards using black PCB? IIRC, Sapphire=blue, HIS=red, Diamond=red. What color are Visiontek?
