New Video Card

I currently have the 7900GT and I have been having problems with it shutting down and artifacts, so I am going to replace the card. I was thinking of getting an eVGA 7950GT 256MB. Do you think not getting the 512MB card will make a big difference?

I can't afford an 8800 right now, but I will be getting a new DX10 card probably sometime in the summer when I get Vista(if it works).

Any recommendations?

IMO, the 512MB will enable higher resolutions and high details, well, when I played Quake4 anyway. It would stutter if played with a 256MB on Ultra, but was smooth on a 512MB.

So your vote is the 512MB card, which would be the KO Superclocked. That does look like a sweet card. Any others out there want to chime in and help out?

This is going to be for the short term. I want to upgrade to a DX10 card by the summer. Thanks for the advice.

depernds on your budget...i personally would NOT buy a 512MNB gfxcard right now and shell out lots of money - UNLESS its defintly DX10 ready.

I have to admit that I am an Nvidia fanboy, so I won't be getting any ATI cards.

As for the 512MB, I see people's point that it is a waste of money with DX10 cards now coming out. It's a bad time to have to get a new card. This would be much easier if more DX10 cards were available. Does anyone know when the rest of the DX10 cards are set for release?

being locked on nvidia is dumb

what you should be looking for is performance and nothing else

I however do prefer ATi but i would have no problem buying an nvidia card with better performance for the price.

Perfromance and price and the two things that I am looking for. I have never owned an ATI card before, so I am not very familiar with their cards. But I hear the negatives such as noise and cooling and it just turns me off.

BTW, I couldn't get your link to work for your silent rig.

Agree, the X1950XT can be had for about the same price as the 7950GT and is a much better card. It runs a lot cooler and more silent than the previous X1900's. Bottom line, break away from Nvidia, you won't be sorry.

By the way, I own a 7900GTX so I am not biased.

Just wondering: if you're having problems shutting down and artifacts, why don't you RMA it? Don't think the 7900 has even been out a year so it has to be under warranty.

Good point. In the end it looks like I will have to do an RMA on the card to eVGA.

As for the ATI cards, I totally agree that they are much faster than a 7950GT. I've read that and I know it will clean up the 7950. But in the end, I am just going to be without a computer for a month until I get my RMA back. Just don't have the money for an 8800 and I hate to spend money on a DX9 card right now.
