i dont really do any gaming anymore besides counterstrike, halflife etc

but i do have 2 monitors hooked up and run alotta stuff (1 gig ram too)

lately when ive been going thru a smoke bomb in cs or like scrolling fast, it almost sounds like my computer is revving up like a car engine but i th ink its the video card fan, which, also stops spinning occationally for some reason

the video card is about 2 years old

you think i should upgradE? if so? to what? i wanna spend alot less than 200....

EDIT-- just checked newegg

for about 110ish i can either get a 256mb FX5700 or 9600

will you be playing half life 2 doom 3? You will not notice much of an improvement from a ti4200 to a 9600 (maybe the xt but not worth it anyways). I would spend an extra 100 and go for the 9800 pro(256-bit interface and 128 mb ram) that would be the smart thing. otherwise wait till a game comes out that runs horrid on your vid card, then upgrade.

If all you play is CounterStrike, well Geforce 2 could get 100 fps in that game. Save your money and buy a new fan.

Ditto.

How can you have stuff lag in your system running CS?!!!

I have that card in my machine a 128mb version but that has about ZERO performance increase on the 64mb one though.

CS runs perfectly well for me.

Format your machine and it will run much better in games.

May just be clogged up full of stuff.

Get a new cooler. The FX 5700 and Radeon 9600 cards are extremely minor upgrades. I went from a GF4 To 4200 to a Radeon 9600 XT...the card is fine, but I am not satisfied with it for the cost.
$30 shipped would be the highest cost of a new coolers, and you can get them as low as $10 shipped.

thanks every1

the rest of my computer is pretty good

amd 2600+
msi nforce2 mobo (best 1 i fgt model #)
2 512 sticks of pc133 ram

if you don't O/C id just unplug the fan and leave it.
make sure you get the right cooler for the GF4
I've seen some out there that are GF4 specific IIRC...

lol thats actually exactly what i did-- i dont o/c so

its unplugged right now....i have 4 case fans so i didn't think it would be a problem

you think i should replace it or keep it unplugged?

whats the best fan for the gf4

9800 Pro is a meaningless upgrade, I'd go with a 9700Pro.. it performs w/in 10fps of the 9800Pro in most if not all games, and is cheaper. The 5900XT someone mentioned looks appealing as well.

I would not recommend 9600/5700 unless you plan on playing DirectX 9 games without AA/Aniso.... at 1024x768 in DX9 games, the 9600Pro/XT are screaming fast... they approach 9700 in fps. But once you start upping the res and turning on AA, it'll slow the 9600's to a crawl.
