New video card issues, need advice

Hello All,

Over the weekend I upgraded my system by installing a new processor and a new video card. The new processor is an AMD 64 X2 6400+ and the video card is a MSI NX8800GT. Everything went pretty smooth with the upgrade. I removed the old video cards drivers and installed the latest drivers from Nvidia. The system works fine until I try to play a game. When I tried to play COD4 the system locks up on the very first screen that appears when the game starts to load. It happened every time I tried it. I then tried BF2142, and that game starts to load and then next thing you know I'm back at the desktop and the game is gone. It happens every time I try it. I then tried Bioshock and that game froze while loading also. I tried Crysis, and surprisingly, the game loaded. I was able to get into the game and start playing for a little bit and then it locked up also. I haven't had any issues running other apps like IE or email. It just seems to be the games that have problems. I am running Windows XP. I am wondering if this is a sign of not enough power? My previous vido card was an ATi X1900XT and I had no issues with that at all. I am not sure of the power requirements for the 8800GT though. I have an Ultra X2 550 watt power supply. I would think that would be enough power for a single video card system like mine, but who knows. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice that would help me pin down the cause of this problem?

Thanks in advance for your time,

GS

The only suggestion I could make off hand is to uninstall your video card drivers, boot up to safe mode and run driver sweeper or some program like it, and then reboot to normal mode and reinstall the latest drivers for your card.

Your PSU should be more than adequate for that card, unless you have some crazy 4 tera raid setup you've neglected to mention.

You also upgraded your CPU, so the video card might not be the only issue here. That X2 6400+ is pretty much the fastest dual core AMD CPU right? I'd make sure you have the latest BIOS for your board and make sure that's running properly first. You upgraded the two main parts of your PC, so you exponentially increased the chances something isn't playing right with the rest of your parts. I'd put the X1900XT back in just to make sure its still nothing wrong with the old card, then go back to troubleshooting the 8800GT.

That sounds like a good idea chizow. I'll re-install my old X1900XT and see if the problems go away or not. It's best to take it one step at a time and see where the problems arise. I'll also run driver sweeper to cleanup any old drivers that may be floating around out there still and also look and see if there are any new bios updates for my MB. Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it.
