Begin sarcasm

hey...according to via fans there was no performance issue with the chipset ....so this is a mute point that most via fans wont take advantage of, right????

End sarcasm

I wonder how it differs from the one @ Viahardware.

The word is MOOT dammit! :)

I've abandoned VIA chipsets now that SiS has gotten their act together.

The new latency patch above is marginally faster than the one at viahardware. I decided to be a guinea pig. :)

For the Athlon chipset market, I would hardly call the ECS K7S5A a worthy bearer of the SiS735 chipset given the many problem that board has (just check out the motherboards forum). SiS won't get my full respect in the Athlon chipset market until I see SiS745 and 746 boards from other board makers besides ECS (Abit, Asus, MSI, etc.).

Now on the Pentium 4 side, I'll agree;) I built a SiS645 based Asus P4S333 + 1.7GHz Pentium 4 combo for my old roommate. It has been rock solid and performs great. There are many board makers building 645 boards and it has gained a lot of respect (MSI, Asus, Gigabyte, etc).

A chipset is only as good as the manufacturer who uses it.

K7S5A is as worthy a bearer of SiS 735 as any board bearing any other chipset. The "issues" are no more than any other mainboard. Then again, there isn't a single board selling at the rate of K7S5A. :D Fact is, for $55, there still isn't a better price/performance board out there. And you don't need the ridiculous array of patches and drivers to half-assedly get some performance out of your subsystems.

First of all, what is the point that you are speaking of?

Second, it's spelled 'moot'. (LE covered this)

Third, moot means debatable or unlikely. How does this work with the noun?

Actually moot means it's only a hypothetical case to debate. (In general use people mean it as being a point that there's so sense to debate because it can't be changed.)

I think his point being moot meant that since there IS no performance problem (according to VIA fans) then there's no point to discussing any patches.

<< Usage Note: The adjective moot is originally a legal term going back to the mid-16th century. It derives from the noun moot, in its sense of a hypothetical case argued as an exercise by law students. Consequently, a moot question is one that is arguable or open to debate. But in the mid-19th century people also began to look at the hypothetical side of moot as its essential meaning, and they started to use the word to mean ?of no significance or relevance.? Thus, a moot point, however debatable, is one that has no practical value. A number of critics have objected to this use, but 59 percent of the Usage Panel accepts it in the sentence The nominee himself chastised the White House for failing to do more to support him, but his concerns became moot when a number of Republicans announced that they, too, would oppose the nomination. When using moot one should be sure that the context makes clear which sense is meant. >>

Not sure why I'm harping on it. :-D

My Chevy is better than your Ford.
No, no, my Ford is better than your Chevy.
I only have to adjust the valve lash on my Chevy 283 every 3000 miles. Fords suck!
Yeah, well the oil pump on my Ford 352 Police Interceptor will last for 33,000 miles and yours won't. Chevy sucks.

Oh, pardon me. I thought I was on the Road and Track forum.

Back to the subject at hand I tried the patch it worked my computer did not melt :)
Ran HD tach before the patch cpu utilization around 78 % and Burst speed about 76 meg per second
this is with two Seagate Baracuda 4 40 gig drives as Raid 0 on a Biostar M7MIA with Highpoint controller.
After patch Modem did not work had to shut down and restart the computer and it works now :)
Cpu utilization at 18 or so % and HD tach Max Burst speed only goes to 80 meg per second and it was maxed so I would assume it did something better then before :)

Does it patch anything that has to do with the onboard RAID controller?? I'm not using RAID but would love to get some performance boost. :)

I'm usinga A7V133 BTW. :)

Off the main topic, but even with a VIA chipset board, with a single Maxtor DiamondMax Plus drive, I was able to reach 76MB transfer rates according to HDTach. Barracuda IV is supposed to be one of the best, I don't see how you were only getting 76 with a RAID setup, even given the latency issue.
