New Version of Win 7 XP-Mode, No VT is needed.

There is a new XP-Mode.

It does not need VT capable CPU any more.
It's certainly good news, since there's a lot of recent business PCs out there that can't do VT.

And on the Hyper-V front, there'll be "Dynamic memory" in Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V:

And, even better news:
The "Virtual Machine Performance" setting goes to "11" instead of only "10". 🙂

Yeah, I know that state of mind of all "Virtual" people is to use the "Balanced Virtual" approach. :\

Actually the need to VT emerged only with Win 7 and now it is reversed.

While Not supported officially, VPC SP1 (circa few years ago) can work on all Versions of Vista/Win 7, and does not need any VT.

You can use it if you wish, only that you have to use your own lic. Win-XP instead of getting free one.

It's embarrassing. When I bought my second Core2Duo (the first one was a present for a friend), I thought, "Why would I ever need VT? I'll save some bucks and get the non-VT version for myself." Since then, I've felt like a dummy. I finally got my own VT-capable desktop (Q9550 with Win7 Ultimate) a week ago.

Maybe I'm slow today, but I can't find anything that resembles a changelog. Is the VT-not-needed thing the only change? If the user HAS a VT enabled CPU, is there any advantage to the new version?

EDIT - I've read more and it looks like this is a patch to the existing VPC/XP-Mode. I don't see anything new except that it works around the need for a VT- enabled CPU.

The change was made to accommodate people that do not have a Computer with CPU capable VT.

If you have CPU-VT use it it would run the Virtual Computer faster than the one that do not have CPU/VT and thus emulate with software.

I still don't have a CPU with VT, although I keep thinking about getting one so that I can use KVM.

I know it's time to build a new computer when every computer I see is four times as fast as the one I'm using.

Actually, I'd never buy something something as high-end as a Q9550 for myself. Intel was nice enough to let me win it in a drawing.

that is not correct. Vmware (ESX) is faster in many cases with Binary Translation no intel-VT on 32 bit o/s compared to Intel-VT. 64bit is where you need it and it does add some overhead if you have an earlier intel-VT.

Consumer wise directed I/O maybe of more use some day

Nice to know. I guess it will eventually be in Windows Updates as either a critical or optional update.

Yea, my problem is that I don't really need anymore CPU power. VT extensions and more cores would be nice but what I have now works fine. I'll probably end up breaking down and getting something this year though.

Yeah, my older Core2Duo E4500 was working fine for me, too.

I recently "discovered" the Intel Celeron 3200 and 3300. These have VT, run around 2.5 GHz, apparently overclock well, have a decent cache, and are as fast as most any of the other Core2Duo chips that I own right now. And they are $50 or less. Frys had them with an MSI motherboard a few weeks ago for a total cost of $30. Unfortunately, I missed that sale.....

Hey...they have it again! http://shopping.dallasnews.com/ROP/ads.aspx?adid=9068602&advid=2519&type= Intel Celeron E3300 with MSI G32TM-P21 motherboard, $35 after $10 rebate.

Yeah, that what I did few months ago (I think I even posted about it in this forum).

I got a while ago few Cel. E3200 and plugged them into IP35/G31 old motherboards.

As is they OC to 3GHz and do VT.

When I have the time I'll install the new XP-mode in a similar computer without CPU/VT, and compare what the difference is between hardware assist VT and software VT.

😎

So what is better now using Sandboxie or a Virtual Machine ? Sense both work on 64 bit now. (Sandboxie I am talking about for the longest time it didn't support 64 bit versions of Vista and 7)

😳 and I can not even claim in the middle of the day that I did not think about it because I am tired. :hmm:
Just don't blame me if it trashes Windows, though. (grin)

You'll notice that I try to answer "difficult" questions at night-time, so I can blame "being tired" for my more stupid answers. When they legalize medical marijuana in Arizona, it'll be perfect for me. I'll be able to give dumb answers all day long.
