New version of IE6 Preview/Beta posted at MS

New version 2462 of IE6 Preview/Beta is now available.

NOTE: When I installed this on WinME, after 96% of the install, the installation process hung. After having dinner and coming back, it was still at the same point, so I clicked "cancel". That also hung (same point after another hour), so I killed that "cancel" process. At which point, the system rebooted and did the next part of the install, and then asked me if I want to resume, I said "yes" and it finished the final 4% and no further problems. Weird!

BUT the big improvement is that it uses much less system/user resources than IE5.5. I like to have a lot of browser windows open - one for techbargains, one for My Yahoo (headlines/stocks/sports), discussion forums like Anandtech, etc. PLUS my great, but resource hogging mail software Agent. And, I have lots of TSR programs - ClipboardMagic, PC Alert, ZoneAlarm, UPS battery backup monitor, etc.

Since I went to IE5.5, I had a tendency to "bottom out", ie use up all the systerm/user resources, but now with IE6, I am nowhere near using them, even with lots of browser windows open.

Another plus is that Windows Explorer is a lot faster now. And, it automatically expands sub-folders when you drag something over to a folder with sub-folders, a big convenience for me.

Both of these are the sorts of improvements that are never mentioned by reviewers, they only mention "features".

I have yet to even use the Personal Bar (it's a button next to search that I haven't clicked yet, so it is not a default).
