So, I'm finally selling my big rig, and getting something a little more fuel efficient, plus it's getting a little long in the tooth, and I wouldn't mind an upgrade.

Here is what I've been looking at. Advice, info on the following cars would be great. I've been reading reviews in C&D and such, but I would like some real world feedback.

2008-2009 Subaru Forester.

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan.

2008-2009 GMC Acadia.

Also any suggestions of vehicles in this catagory wouldn't hurt either.

Thanks!

The Acadia and it's brothers are quite large compared to the other two, did you want to cross shop them?

My vote is the forester. My boss has one, it has a pretty good tow rating for a small SUV (or whatever it really is) and gets pretty good gas mileage as well. (I want to say it was best in this class of vehicle?) Plus, it did really well in crash tests.

I say Forester, there was actually a recent review comparing it against the Rogue, CR-V and Rav4 - somehow the Subie came out on top~
I can't seem to remember which site ... motor trend, car and driver, or edmunds
I can't say much about GMC and the VW though

I also agree with the subie. Looking at the impreza wrx for my next vehicle for those winter months and the all important turbo

Heres the article in reference: Text

ya, i know they have the 3rd row seating and everything. I'm mainly wondering if anyone here has any experience with any or all of these vehicles.

I'm biased towards the Tiguan simply because I'm a VW-fanboy. This little SUV looks really, really cool.

BUT, I'd also seriously consider the new Forester as well.

It's going to be hard to find too many people with experience with the Tiguan since it's so new.

I wouldn't consider the GMC at all.

Have you looked at the Fuel-effeciency between these vehicles? I'd think that the Forester would have the others beat.

It all depends on your needs. Do you need the extra space? Acadia is the obvious choice. If not, go for the Forrester. I wouldn't consider the Tiguan because it's 1st model year and a Volkswagen so reliability will be a problem.

the VW is a first year US release. They released it in 08 in Europe.

Ya, I like the Forester, except for that the turbo charged version requires premium fuel. I wouldn't enjoy paying an extra $0.20-0.30 a gallon. Quite a tough decision. Hopefully next weekend I can do some test driving.

those vehicles above aren't in the same class to me. Would have helped if the OP stated what they use it for.

I have been looking in the mid-size class C/SUV, I would hope that they all kind of fit this catagory, except I know the acadia has a 3rd row. The reason I started this was just to get feedback from anyone who had been around any/all of these 3 vehicles. It will basically be used as the family wagon. Kid coming in August. I need a fair amount of cargo space, to haul stuff, and it has to be able to handle the mud. I live in BFE Kansas, and the last couple of days we've gotten 3" of rain. I travel on a lot of dirt roads, and by dirt I mean dirt, not these nice fancy gravel roads I've seen in eastern Kansas.

i love the moment someone has a kid, all of a sudden the roadways and needs they encounter change. If you want a 4x4 SUV get one, people have been carting 2 kids, dog and groceries/luggage for decades down the worst of roads in just a station wagon/sedan.

All the vehicles I currently own are 4x4, it's not like I'm just thinking I need one now that we're having a kid, and I know for a fact that a station wagon/sedan will not make it on the roads that I have to drive during/after most storms. I have relatives that drive them, and we always have to pick them up at the highway, or somewhere stuck along the way when they come to visit.

Given your requirements I think the Subaru offers pretty much everything you want. The '09 Forester is supposed to be quite a bit larger than the outgoing model. I looked at an '07 when carshopping but just couldn't deal with the dinky back seat. There's no way I'd be able to comfortable stick a rear facing child seat back there and still have a front seat passenger have any bit of leg room.

The '09's should have more room to play with.

When it comes to mud/snow/slop...short of a dedicated 4x4...the Subaru is one of the most competent vehicles you can drive. One of the least complicated, but reliable and effective AWD systems you can buy.
