soccerman,
Yes, I've tried them. I haven't done any benchmarking, but they *do* seem faster. Also, they are very stable...more so than the 1.05 vesion.

And yes, they are worth the download

as you can see from Paulson's post, among others, the V3 isn't a good board to get anymore. it was an all around awesome board, until just recently.

Hey becuase they V4/5 have their own texture compression, does that mean they could work with metal (they supposedly substitute their calls with the S3TC ones...)

But Soccerman, surely you wouldn't agree that the Savage4 is better tan the Voodoo 3?

That's crazy talk :D

Celeron 533A 840 MHz (FSB 105, SDRAM 105 CAS2)
V3 2000 @ 170 MHz Vsync disabled.
SB Live!
Windows 98 (first edition, but heavily updated)
Reboot between each benchmarking program.

1) Unreal Tournament UTBench 800x600, everything on
2) Quake III Arena 800x600 demo001, everything on, WickedGL
3) 3DMark2000, 1024x768, 16-bit

3dfx 1.05 drivers:

1) 37.?, 38.4,38.5
2) 61.6, 61.9, 61.9
3) 3072, 3067

1.05a drivers (uninstalled old driver, cleared out registry and inf directory voodoo file):

1) 37.8, 38.2
2) 60.7, 61.2
3) 3051, 3056

Ie. Installing the 1.05a drivers gave me slower performance in all three benches I ran.

Reinstalled the "old" 1.05 drivers. UT and Quake3 improved to previous numbers. 3DMark3000 was about the same, but I only ran it once.

Now, the numbers are so close, I can truly only conclude is that the 1.05a are slightly worse (on my machine) or else they make no difference at all.

Dammit!

After installing then uninstalling those 1.05a drivers (and reinstalling the official 1.05 drivers), my system has been doing funny things. Whereas I could repeatedly play UT, exit, play UT, exit, etc, etc. for days previously (with either the official 1.04 or 1.05 drivers), now after I play UT and surf, my IE 5.5 (beta) is flaky. Problem only gets corrected by rebooting.

I guess it's time to clean up the registry again.

Hey Eug,
Just wondering if ya also tried the v5 drivers too. They're suppose to be much better than any of the v3 drivers.

1.05a drivers are from a guy who mixed the V5 driver files and the 1.05 driver files. He claims he only transferred over what he thought was relevant to gain optimal performance and stability (most importantly, the V5 driver's OpenGL files).

Huh? I've run Direct3D and Glide and software.

Direct3D is slightly choppier but frame rates are good and colour is better than Glide. Software was fine (Celeron 840) but slower - don't remember much about the colour.
