New (USED) Hond Fit - Loud Screeching Noise While Driving

I was driving to work today and started to hear this piercing screeching noise while on the highway. It sounded like it was coming from the wheels. The noise sounded like metal on metal or nails on a chalk board. As I turned off of the highway I felt a thud coming from the rear and the noise stopped.

Does anyone know what this might be? I am going to take the car back to the dealership so they can look at it but am a bit worried I shouldn't drive it at all now.

maybe brake wear indicator? if the pad is worn down it's supposed to make a squealing noise until it's been replaced.

...maybe the thud was it falling off.

but if you bought it from a dealership it's something they should have checked

or it's the gremlin falling off

Well I bought the car on sunday from a Honda dealership so hopefully my brakes are still good.

I have no idea if all is fine but so far no noise. It screeched from about a mile then there was a small thud I felt through the gas pedal and then it stopped. I drove my car to the dealership, and it didn't have any issues but they are taking a look at it now. Hopefully its nothing serious or something that they can fix.

The wear tab is a small piece of metal that is about 1/4 tall, 1 inch wide, and very thin. It will make noise when the brakes are NOT depressed, and will go away when the brakes are pressed. If it came off, it would make a 'ting' sound as it hit the inside of the rim. I doubt you could hear it come off inside a vehicle.

Without hearing the sound or looking at your car, I would bet it was either something you hit and got stuck under your vehicle, or something large (usually exhaust related) came unattached and was dragging on the street until it broke off.

Exactly what you describe happened to me in my old 1995 Honda Accord. Turns out it was a rock that somehow got lodged in my rotor/wheel area.

Rock eventually fell out while driving and noise disappeared forever.

...At least this is what my mechanic told me. The rotor was gouged up pretty bad and needed to be replaced.
