New twist on a old scam...

So we get a call at work today and the assistant manager takes the call. A few minutes later he tells me hes on the phone with someone from Nigeria. (Alarm bells start going off in my head) He says the guy wants to buy $2,500 worth of Nike Cycling shoes. (Something we don't even carry mind you) The assistant manager tells him we don't carry them and the guy says if we buy them from another shop and send them to him, he'll pay us $200.00! (This gets the assistants interest going, and about this time I learn whats going on) He wants to pay us with a American Express the assistant tells me. I tell the assistant manager to tell him "Sure we'll help him out, if he sends us a certified cashiers check from a reputable bank." Well the assistant Manager is a total n00b and knows nothing about computers, the INTERNET, or the scams floating around, especially all the ones originating from Nigeria. I tell him that it sounds like a scam to me, and that if the guy won't pay with a cashiers check we will NOT do business with him. By this time he has been on the phone with this guy for the better part of an hour, he is using a AT&T service that is relaying what he is typing via the INTERNET. The assistant manager is getting REAL flustered by this time dealing with the whole matter. (The "customer" never agrees one way or another to use a cashiers check up to this point) The guy is supposed to Email me with all pertinent info. After about a hour and a half of this (and going through two different operators, the first of which got fed up and handed the whole thing over to a second guy) eventually the second operator tells the assistant manager "I would just hang up if I were you." Which he does. Then he goes home.

So a few minutes after he leaves, the phone rings again. It's the operator again saying the guy wants to confirm his Email address with us. I tell the operator to tell the guy that the ONLY way I will deal with him is if he sends a certified cashiers check.

Operator: "He says he only has a American Express card"

Me: "Tell him he can take the American Express card down to the bank and get a Cashiers check."

Operator: "He just hung up."

Me: "Yeah, I bet he DID." 😉

Man is EVERYONE in Nigeria scam artists? And I can't believe the assistant Manager was gonna fall for this crap. I mean does FRANK LAWSON sound like a common Nigerian name to YOU!:disgust:

Are you serious?? Even if I was an internet n00b this whole thing has SCAM written all over it!

I am curious if the guy calling was using a relay service for the Deaf? Sounds like that was what it was. That is a free service that the phone companies pay for so we end up paying for the call. Bah.

Yeah it was a relay service.

Also I kept telling the assistant manager "If it's NOT a scam, why isn't he just dealing directly with NIKE? They have on line stores TOO you know!"

n00bs are FUN! 😉

Damn, if he's gonna call someone in Eugene, you'd think he'd be trying to buy $2500 of the homegrown. 😉
