New TW 10MBit connection - Slow wireless?

So, lastnight I ordered Time Warner cable 10mbit high speed internet. Its 10mb/1mb speeds. I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S1712 laptop. When I ran some speed tests, I got the following results:

Wireless
4-6mb Download
near 1mbit upload

Wired
10mbit+ download
1mbit+ upload

Now, I know wired it better than wireless, but how can wireless be 5mbits slower than wired? I have 54g on the laptop, and the same for my Linksys wireless G router. Is there something that needs to be set on the router/laptop to get the proper speeds?

wireless is just slow.

You can try forcing your router to G only and try changing channels for better performance.

Wireless is always going to be slower. it's hard to see your complaint when you're getting 4-6Mbit/1Mbit on it. always remember that when using wireless with a password or encryption, there will be more overhead in your packets.
