New TV has awful image for some channels

This happens on some channels through my DirecTV receiver, basically everything's completely fuzzy and in a weird color...is it the TV or could it have to do with the HDMI cables or something else?

Here's the TV: http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-50L220.../dp/B0073K64NM

What was your previous tv? Directv compresses channels to various degrees to be able to carry them all. So some channels will look worse than others.

could be HDMI or low signal. Looks like digital tiling to me, at least the brighter spots.

Does it sort of break apart sometimes and then clear up a little? If you've ever had a video card over heat or have been overclocked too high it looks like that a little also.

So it looks like the DirecTV receiver was defaulting to 480i for certain channels (even HD ones), but if I set it at 720p/1080i the picture looks fine.

There didn't seem to be a way to "fix" the resolution at anything, because even if I changed the channel to another and back to the original, it would go back to 480i.

Turns out I can disable the 480 modes in the settings, which seems to solve it.

Ted looks better that way though... (insert joke about white stuff on his face).

Interesting that there are issues at 480. Seems like the cable box is a bit borked?
