"Includes up to 30 minutes of starter airtime upon activation", so the total minutes are actually 280. Not bad for an emergency use.

Yep, Phone really sux...

Virgin Mobil maybe better, first year costs $120 (phone $60, $60 airtime, $20 worth free airtime, $10 start-up time) will get you 360 min, better phone (with txt message, and vibrate.) And, you can check your voice mail from land phone. But, it costs you $25 more.

But how long can you keep your minutes for? I'm looking for something like this, but has to last me a year or so, as I only need it for emergency use.

Airtime for this Tracfone promotion is annual, you activate once, it lasts for one full year. But, don't quote me on this one, I heard, annual airtime does not roll-over, you lost it after one year. Short-term re-charge phone cards' price are vary, some last longer than others, you do keep un-used min.

VirginMobil requires $20 every 90 days, you keep the minutes as long as your phone stays active; it is annoy for some who don't like to keep tracking. They do send you e-mail and txt mssage reminding you; still, you need to re-charge every 3 month, it is not as simply as annual.

I am considering buying one. They are $48 at my local Walmart. But looking on line their service record really sucks. There are a lot of unhappy customers out there. Now I'm not sure.

Callplus is great for an emergency phone that you don't use to talk a lot. I use it because I need my own personal phone number, but I don't talk a lot on it, so those regular monthly calling plan is too much for me. Callplus uses ATT network, and it got features like voice mail and even international calling. I bought a used Nokia 6160 from ebay (cost you anywhere from $20 to $35 with a bunch of accessories usually), activated with the Pharos International $15 Activiation Kit with 100 min that gives me 3 months of service. After that, I only have to pay $10 to renew every 3 month with all the minutes roll over. This means $20-35 for the phone + $15 100min kit + $30 for first year renewal = $60 to $75. IF Tracefone does not allow your first year's minute to roll over, then Callplus is a better deal because you can roll over as long as you want for $10 every 3 months.

Bump on the call plus thru pharos international. Great deal at 3.33 month w a 90 day $10 card. Painless deal.
Maybe get a cheaper phone in the f/s/t forum too.

You can get 150 free minutes if a current customer refers you. Send me an e-mail (fpolaski@logikos.com) and I will refer you. You must get the referral before you sign up. Thanks.

Please DO NOT send this joker any referals. He did not post the deal. In fact, this is his first ever post.

From the Tracfone website:

The units remaining on your phone will carry over if your service remains active or if service is reactivated within 120 days from the date your TracFone becomes deactivated. Unused units will expire if you wait longer than 120 days from deactivation to reactivate your TracFone.

I've had my tracfone since July last year. I love it. Very servicable phone with all the features a casual/emergency user would need. If you want text messaging and other crap, then you'll need a service contract and an expensive phone. Tracfone is highly recommended. I got a referral from a member back when I signed up and the bonus minutes came very quickly.

I know many people have complained about their service, and the cust serv reps that I talked to were not the brightest, but I was always able to resolve any issues i had. Just don't ask for too much ;)

So for an emergency phone for the wifey, it's been great. The phone is big but a workhorse, and it's worked whenever it was needed.

Is a Verison phone @ $15 per month for 100 mins a better deal? I'm past my 1 year contract and I'm looking for the best deal. I use the phone about 50 mins a month.

No, I don't think so. Also it doesn't have voice mail or caller id. Very bare bones, but great coverage.

Thanks for the info on Callplus. I was on an AT&T plan and now use the AT&T prepaid service, but am switching to callplus. Can't beat $10/90 days.

I had a tracfone until a few months ago. Its better than nothing...barely. I used mine because a city I travel to alot, is in the middle of nowhere michigan, and I dont have a phone there. The reception is horrible, I pretty much had to use it as a pager, where someone would call, then I would know to drive to town to a payphone and call them back... In a main city, where there's normal cell phone coverage, its was alittle better, but its still analog signal, so theres still a ton of static. But, better than $30/month for a regular plan for some people
