New Toyota Corolla Rant

The gf had a 2012 Toyota Corolla. I had a 2013 Kia Forte (that I wanted to sell).

She liked the 'updated' look of my Kia (navigation, heated seats, power seats, etc). After looking at 2016 Corolla's, she decided she wanted to upgrade.

The driving factor was that the 2012 Corolla, while having less than 45,000 miles, had some rattles, including one coming from the center dash cluster and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. Tried pulling out stereo and all. It was seriously annoying and we both started to hate the car because of it (we carpool every morning to work).

So GF has bright idea that we should trade our cars in and get her a new Corolla. They offered me $1,000 less than what my car was listed on Autotrader for, but still good KBB value. They offered her KBB on hers as well. Deal was 'good enough'.

We ended up leasing the 2016 because she was likely going to trade it in anyway after 2 years and the lease payment was a little less than half of what the monthly payment on a 6 year loan would be.

Anyway... this new car already has a worse rattle than the 2012. It's a nice car. Leather, navigation. It's the most expensive, best trimmed Corolla. It's a great car, but the experience is being ruined by this damn rattle! This one is coming from the top of the dash, about 12 inches in from the speedometer. If I push down on the dashboard, it stops. But otherwise, it sounds someone is shaking a cup of dice. The slightest vibration, even on smooth highways, it just rattles and rattles. It started as a light tick at about 800 miles, and now with just 1600 miles on odometer, it just sounds like something is broken.

Am I wrong for feeling like my confidence in the long term viability of the car is already in question? If something like this simple rattle surfaces so early, it makes me wonder what else is going to go wrong.

We're busy this month, but after things settle, we're going to take it up to the dealer. I'm worried they'll just make it worse or create new rattles because i'm thinking they'll have to take the entire dash apart just to get to it.

Lightly used four year old economy car rattles, brand new exact same economy car rattles .. no surprise there. The car will be plenty reliable. Step up to a Camry or Lexus for better fit and finish.

My Mom's 2014 Corolla has rattles in both A pillars at certain speeds.

My 11 year old Honda Civic Hybrid and my 9 year old Honda Insight have fewer rattles than her car.

This rattle happens when I'm backing out of the garage. Or when I'm doing 20mph in my neighborhood. Or when I'm doing 45 on a city street. Or when I'm driving on the highway.

It's constant. If only I could get in there to slip a piece of felt in.

My 2010 Corolla has a couple rattles. One in the back (probably near the rear speakers because I have a subwoofer in the trunk). The other is on the drivers side door. I usually have my music up pretty high so I hardly even notice, but when I put my hand on the door in a certain place that rattling stops. I'm pretty sure a small chunk of dynamat would resolve the noise but I'm too lazy to pull apart the door to fix it.

When I purchased the car, I noticed these little spacers between the front pillars and the dash that the dealership probably put there because of complaints. It kinda looks like a TSB fix in a way since the spacers are visible and look a bit aftermarket.

I did buy the car for reliability and price, so at least it doesn't bother me that much.

Um, this brand new car has a warranty, correct?
...

Also, getting rid of two perfectly good cars because one of them has a rattle?
...
Also, leasing because the payment is "less"?
...
Also, sharing big-ticket item with a GF?
...

Very fail. Much lol.

Yes

No. We decided to drive my KIA down to Florida for vacation because it was sitting in the garage and I wanted to drive it a little before selling it. She realized she appreciated the extras (heated seats, leather, navigation, sunroof, etc) and it put her over the edge. She wanted a new car. She then said she'd let me trade mine in as part of the deal to kill two birds with one stone.

No. Was selling KIA because I was gifted a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer with 45,000 miles. I had that truck and my gf was letting me drive her car most of the time. The KIA sat in the garage for months because I wasn't driving it much, yet I was making $500 per month payment. I wanted to sell it, regardless of what she did with her car. The dealer offered me private party sale value. I was asking $1000 above. So it worked out. I don't have a $500 monthly car payment for the next 3 years. (i was about halfway through the loan).

No, not just because the payment was less. There were a lot of factors that made leasing more sensible. Gf makes nearly $100k per year. One of the factors is that she wanted to keep her payment low, so leasing it kept her payment below what her payment was on the Corolla she previously bought. Yes, the lease expires in two years and she'll likely lease another newer Toyota.

No, it's her car. We live together and car pool. It's in her name.

Rented a Corolla this past weekend. I could not get over the crappy CVT and engine buzz on this thing. I expected better, even for a sub 20K car.

TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER! A new car usually has a 12 month "adjustment" period where they will fix things like that.I had a rattle in the driver's knee air bag cover of my 2010 Mitsubishi during that t ime and they fixed it. If its obvious and always happening they can usually find it.

It's not like all Corollas are CVT. Manuals and traditional automatics are available too.

Did you roll a terrible loan into that Kia Forte payment of yours? $500 x72months = $36,000

No surprise on the Corolla - Toyota quality on there lower line cars is not good at all - See Yaris, Corolla, Rav 4, and all of Scion.

http://www.jdpower.com/ratings/study/Initial-Quality-Study-(IQS)-by-Make/565ENG

Car payment was $478 and I bought the Forte very new when there was only 2 in the country. It was the rare fully loaded SX.

But yes, I had bought a Ford Fiesta, new, about 1.5 years before, and it was a lemon that Ford refused to address. I couldn't sell it because the transmission was clearly faulty, I didn't want to drive it because the transmission was clearly faulty. So I ate the loan, and rolled it into the Kia loan.

That was part of why I wanted to get out of it. I was finally in the black and could trade it/sell it without needing to pay more on the loan. It was a bad deal, and I blame Ford for selling me a bad car.

Put this around the edges of the part that rattles. Cured many an interior rattle with it:

Thanks and good idea. But I've done quite a few stereo installs and I've already tried various things including felt strips, etc.

Bottomline is the dashboard needs to come off because it feels like it's somewhere inside the instrument panel is rubbing the bottom of the dash lid. It's near the defroster vent. If I push down on the dashboard, it goes away. But I don't see getting to it without some serious labor I don't feel responsible for.

We have a 2014 Corolla that hasn't rattled at all. Almost 40k on it. Actually, we haven't had any issues with it. It's got the leather seats and navi and seat warmers etc., can't remember which model it is though ATM.

If it wasn't Toyota, I'd get it repaired as soon as possible since some manufacturers don't like to cover rattles except very early in the warranty. I had a car from the antithesis of Toyota, and a few months after purchase I heard something pop loose from inside the dashboard, and the dash then vibrated and buzzed considerably. The dealer told me outright that I was beyond the 6-week limit for getting it repaired under warranty (not mentioned in the written warranty), and the manufacturer backed them up. I never bought a vehicle from them again.

My parents bought two 2015 corollas at once. One has an annoying rattle coming from the roof at > 40 mph and the other one is very quiet no rattles. Weird, but I trust they will last 150k+ miles.

Girlfriend and her sis both got a pair of 2015 civic hybrids. No rattle whatsoever and the ride is great. Have you guys shop around to the other competitors or are pretty set on getting a Toyota?

Update: Took car to dealer several weeks ago. Rattle disappeared for a few days, then came back with a vengeance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgnr3LMZsms

It's the persistent clicking/rattle sound. If the gf and I are talking, it's loud enough to distract both of us.

It's going back to dealer tonight.

honestly from the video it doesn't sound bad at all... that said it's all in what bothers you. if you aren't happy with it, it needs to get resolved.

I removed the rear bench seat on a 2006 corolla, found coins, removed coins and rattles gone
