TomTom just just announced a new embedded nav system that acts like a removable carstereo front.

It should solve a problem that a lot of people have with embedded and portable systems

Looks like it's Toyota Yaris only for the moment though 🙁

Actually i think ti just exacerbates the problem. Now you have a removable GPS that you absolutely need to plug in and keep in the car, otherwise you have a big hole in the center console.

Personally if I'm filling a double DIN I wouldn't put up with such a tiny screen, but that's just me.

looks cool but with quality GPS units @ ~$200, its a tough sell (to me anyway)

compared to what, leaving it on the little hook it comes with mounted on your window? you can just slip it off that...

if anyone has a GPS i would highly recommend not leaving it in your car, plus the sun can beat on it pretty hard through the glass...

TomTom heeft op de de IAA-autoshow in Frankfurt zijn eerste embedded navigatiesysteem getoond. Het apparaat is als frontje bevestigd aan de autoradio, maar het is ook afneembaar en los te gebruiken.

De fabrikant van navigatiesystemen heeft een overeenkomst gesloten met Toyota. Het Yaris-model van de autofabrikant zal optioneel voorzien zijn van het inbouw-navigatieapparaat, waarbij de TomTom met een kliksysteem aan de geïntegreerde autoradio gekoppeld kan worden. Het embedded apparaat zal volgens de fabrikant 'volledige audio-integratie' met de ingebouwde speakers bieden. Zo zijn instructies en telefoongesprekken via de luidsprekers te horen.

De nieuwe oplossing van TomTom, waar nog geen naam voor bekend is gemaakt, zal voorzien zijn van bluetooth en een wma-/mp3-speler. Het frontje kan ook via de usb-poort aan de pc aangesloten worden, zodat de gebruiker het apparaat van updates kan voorzien.

This is true. It's not necessarily a bad thing that it's easy to steal, saves damage to your dashboard.

Just imagine if you took all of your in car gadgets with you every time you left the car. You could be carrying a GPS, a stereo faceplate, a radar detector, a XM radio tuner, an iPod, etc.

Better get some cargo pants.

I'm sorry, are you advocating for cargo pants or making all of our stuff easier to steal? Look, if you don't feel like carry it around with you just be sure to lock it in the glove compartment - thats what I do and I usually take the mount off the window and put that in there too. I agree that if you leave something in plain sight you are inviting trouble, but still I'm not giving up TomTom because of it. The 720 that I use is amazing, and that one is actually really slim and not a hassle to carry around - like the ONE - because its so thin. TomTom's new products are all good like that.
