ok so i just bought a new linksys broadband router model number WRT54GS... ok so i just got my laptop to a sony vaio w/ wireless capabilites B and G... and yeah i set up my router and i get excellent signal but when i try to get the info on the laptop like ip... its very very slow and dosent get any signal. im right next to the router too... can someone help me... thanks alot

First thing is to update the drivers/firmware. I had a similar problem (slow/dropped) and new drivers fixed it. Sony should have a downloads section for your model, compare the model of your wifi card and driver version to what they have listed.

i checked the updates for my laptop and there are no new updates for the wireless card. the card is built in so iono if that makes a difference.... is there anything else i should try?

What adapter is it? Unless it's a brand new model there's almost definitely a new driver out for it. Even if it is brand new, there's still a good chance. Go to your network connections applet (Control Panel) and look at the properties of your wireless connection, it should say what it is. Try the manufacturer, they should have a download section. I'd lay money this is your problem.

As for your router, you need to find out what version it is of that model (it likely says on the bottom, maybe on a sticker?) and go here, pick your router from the list.
