New to Vista Ultimate, using the 64-bit version

Hello,

I just built a new system (e8400, 8800gt, 2g ram, abit ip35-3, seagate 7200.11 500g)..haven't begun OCing or even putting the ram at rated timings...

I have a few questions in regard to the 64-bit OS...

1) Things like spyware terminator and spyware doctor do not support live scanning of the 64-bit OS. Does anyone know of a Vista 64-bit compatible software (outside of windows defender) that protectects like those other programs?

2) Coretemp does not work with this OS and I am having a hard time figuring out if Speedfan (latest version) works with this. Anyone know if speedfan does work or a good alternative program that works with the 64-bit Vista? This will be very important when I start overclocking.

3) I am not familiar with all the services that are being run, any suggestion on places to go where they suggest a nice minimalist configuration...

my goals for the pc are, MatLab crunching (sometimes on extremely large data sets), gaming, some mp3 files, watching some movies (not a core component of the system).

Any help is appreciated. If I missed anything important, please feel free to advice.

Thank you,
Rich

This Core Temp hack works with Vista 64. Link
With this hack you have to run a .bat file and then Core Temp.exe every time you start CoreTemp. I modified the .bat file so it it runs Core Temp.
First create a folder, i.e., CoreTemp, then unzip the 4 files in the hack to this folder. Right click on the coretemp-startup.bat file and edit.
Atsiv -u ALSysIO64.sys
Atsiv -f ALSysIO64.sys

Add a start command that will load Core Temp. Change the path to where Core Temp.exe is located. My file looks like this:

Atsiv -u ALSysIO64.sys
Atsiv -f ALSysIO64.sys
start "CoreTemp" "C:\CoreTemp\Core Temp.exe"

Save the file and create a shortcut to the .bat file on your desktop.

my suggestion: to turn things "off" download a program called autoruns (search on file hippo), but most of vista's default tasks do not actually take up much RAM. RAM is used for various things like prefetch IIRC, which makes it look like you have less RAM available.

basically, vista can take a long time to boot up, but once it's running, you won't gain much from disabling every little process

Thank you very much.

I will look at that mod and look at tweaks page.

Does anyone know of any live anti-malware/spybot etc software that works?
