New to the world of AMD - where to begin?

I've only built Intel-based systems and now want to explore AMDs offerings. I'm well versed in Intel's product lines, but realized I know next to nothing on the competition.

How does one go about picking a good AMD processor? I guess I'd like to see chart doing side-by-side performance of P4s and their AMD equivalents, but maybe there's a better approach to learning about them.

Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Check out the Anandtech CPU section. They have many detailed articles about the CPU's individual architecture's and benchmark's with side by side comparision's of the different types of CPU's as well. I think that might be a good place to start.

Well, the Athlon 64s match up very well against P4s (model number to GHz) for now. The only real choices are which socket and how much to spend. Socket 754 provides single channel memory (but is still blazingly fast), Socket 939 provides dual channel memory and the opportunity to upgrade to a dual core CPU down the road. Right now I'd go for Socket 754 and upgrade to Socket 939 when dual core CPUs hit.
