New to the router world, some security questions...

So, just got my router up and running and have 2 desktops connected to the web thru it (netgear RP614v3).

I play WoW and opened up the ports (port forwarding) for the Updater...does that compromise my security?
Also, all I did, essentially, is change the password to my router...what other things do I need to do to allow me to game online but still stay safe?

Thanks, as always, guru's!

I wouldn't open any ports unless you actually had problems connecting. I can play BF2 and other online games just fine without opening ports or moving my rig into the DMZ. I would change any names or passwords that were default as this is the first security issue that hackers look for. Depending on the port numbers you opened I wouldn't worry too much Other than that you should be good. I would have avoided netgear though.

How strange...that was me that started this thread, and noone else uses this computer....who the hell is "vrmuds"?!?!?!?!?!

Anyway, noted and thanks. The netgear is just a router that I had for the last 2 years or so but never got around to using (never had a reason really). Going to be upgrading when I get a new rig later this month though.

I should mention that I went to "Shields Up!" and it showed everything as stealthed...guess I'm good then still eh?
