Hey guys,

As a bit of a computer geek, having built my PC and really getting into the whole hardware scene, I visite this site a lot looking for answeres on various issues. While I never became a member, I floated quite a bit.

So why become a memeber now? Well, sadly, the enxt generation of consoles looms over us, and I simply cannot find a video game specific board where I want to be a member. People claim things they don't even understand, and it drives me nuts.

I'm hoping this forum will prove more usful to my interests and inqueries which are all pretty much based on the technology behind these systems without having some fanboy claim the PS3 is 200x better than the 360. I have my 360 ready to be picked up on the 22nd, and I'm glad that they haven't officially announced a new Devil May Cry or God of War or Ico, or i'd be a couple more hundered in the hole with a ps3 preorder.

So, to start things off...

Objectivley,

When I compared the specs of both systems, I really didn't see a difference. Some sites say the Cell is better than Xenon, back and forth, but I'm guessing that the two systems will be damn close in visual quality with the PS3 having a bit of an edge.

Also, what technical in-game aspects have impressed you the most? For me, its the sheer amount of enemies on screen at one time. All normal mapped, detailed, the whole deal, on screen at the same time.

There's also a dynamic anination engine being worked on for the game Invasion. I recall seeing a video of 2 zombies tackling a woman on the net somewhere, if anyone is interested, i could dig it up.

Loking forward to posting with you guys.

* Nintendo fanboy checking in * :p

Welcome to the forum, mojovonious -)

Personally, I'm not that much into the hardware specs. They can be using whatever engines or processors or magic potions to run the consoles. We all know how the current console generations boast their powers to kill each other, but in the end the games don't really use up the power provided by the consoles.

What I'm looking for are the games provided by the systems. Not in terms of quantity, but in terms of quality.
Sadly, I'm no longer a pimple-faced teenager who often skips class to finish a puzzle in games I'm playing through. For now, I want games that are simple and fun, and can bring me lots of amusements without having to keep reloading my save games because I just got killed by a stray bullet from some wired characters >(

Not sure what your take on that, though. But from your first post, it looks like you're more into the hardware for now?

Imho, hardware specs are pretty much irrelevant. It's all about the games, and the "extras" that the system can do. (i.e. Xbox Live, hard drive features, etc.)

I, like you, don't care about the brand of console , but the games. And I agree, eiether console could have all the bells and whistles it wants, but its just up to the developer to use them. I wouldn't have gotten my 360 if I didn't have 5 games that really interested me.

But on all the other boards, i just feel crazy because everyone falls for sony's hype, thinking all PS3 games will look like Killzone, and that its not possible on the Xbox360 when really, the only tech differences are minimal.

But really, Xbox Live sold me on the XBox360. After E3, I thought the 360 was a joke until I saw the 20 minute Xbox Live video. Hopefully more people will go online this gen.

Welcome to our humble software forum here, mojovonious.

I post the majority of my software/game comments here because there are some great, knowledgeable people here. I dont think I've ever *not* had a question answered except for my most recent Ghost Console question. Anyways, on with your console questions..

When I compared the specs of both systems, I really didn't see a difference. Some sites say the Cell is better than Xenon, back and forth, but I'm guessing that the two systems will be damn close in visual quality with the PS3 having a bit of an edge.

Keep in mind that the PS3 and the XboX360 are both using very very different types of technology to acheive the same goal -to make a console that plays games (among other media type things). But lets forget the technology for a second and talk about the developers. Because these are the guys that are creating the applictions that take advantage of the tech inside the little boxes. It doesnt matter how powerful the hardware is, if you dont have great artist, compelling gameplay, and good programming -you're most likely not going to have a rotten egg. Look at the Doom 3 engine. Both Doom 3 and Quake 4 utilize the same tech (I'm not aware of Raven making any mentionable technical tweaks to the engine), but look at the difference in quality (please ignore the technical aspect like smoother running or choppier frame rates for now). Despite both games using essentially the same tech, Quake 4 was a much more enjoyable game to me! Why? Because the developers made a difference...they made a game that was more fun to play. So, my long winded point is that it's about the software at this point. Techncially, both game are on the same playing feild, but one if more fun to play than the other (but thats subjectable of course -but you get my point). Both systems are offering some fantastic tech to us. Hell, I'm still very satisfied with my GC and PS2. I think they both offer great gameplay and GFX, especially after playing God of War and Resident Evil 4. I personally have not pre-ordered or even plan on getting a 360. Why? I feel there is really no need. I can play CoD2 and Oblivion on my already powerful enough PC. There are no must have title for it -its one of the reasons I dont own a Xbox. As far as a PS3? I'm already sold on it because of the library that will be there. Have you seen MGS4? Good lord I'm there day 1! You can find it here: http://www.gametrailers.com/

Also, what technical in-game aspects have impressed you the most? For me, its the sheer amount of enemies on screen at one time. All normal mapped, detailed, the whole deal, on screen at the same time.

Well, my personal opinion is that the PS3, in the end, will be a more powerful machine pound-for-pound. I have nothing factual to back that up, its just my own personal opinion. But one thing to keep in mind, the 360 has Live!...the PS3 has no network model established by Sony. They've left it up to the developers/publishers, much like they are doing now for the PS2.

...again, welcome aboard.

Actually, I'd extend Seeruk's sentiments to the PC, as well.

I havent played on Live, but I cannot imagine that it's a better service than something of equel pay structure on the PC. Its not free, right?

Since you're new - here's a tip. If someone gives you SW advice and it turn out to be incorrect, coming back to the forum and posting multiple threads about how all of us are 'jerk-offs' for screwing you over is *NOT* a good idea.

And on a completely unrelated note, apparently the new Half-Life Anthology does NOT allow for the downloading of Counter-Strike. :p

Wilkommen to AT Software!

you'll find your share of fanboys here as well.

i'm just a bandwagon hopper and frontrunner.

i wait until everything has come out and see who's on top.

i just follow the console that makes the best games.

it's really the software that counts most, not how many polygons per character each console can churn out.

It's a whopping ~$4 per month. But for all that it provides, it's a freakin' bargain!

Check out all the features.

And sure, you can use an IM program, and Ventrillo, and other software on the PC... But it's not all encompassing. Only a fraction of the people in whatever game will be using any of it. It's just overall very clunky compared to Xbox Live.

Actually when I posted it I was thinking only in terms of consoles, but now you ask.... I cant think of any system on any platform including PC that is so complete, trouble free and just generally awesome!

I think the PS3 not even attempting something similar will be a big mistake, especially for people like me who dont really care about single player games (they bore me) and only get a real kick out of human v human (v humanv human v human...etc) battle :)
