New to SSD, I keep getting CHK Disk on boot up

I just installed the ocz vertex plus and I have been impressed to say the least. It was only $40 AR and I havent seen a noticeable difference compared to the intel 320 that we had ($200 drive).

One problem I have is I see it goes into chk disk before booting into windows 7. This seems to be random and happens maybe once every day or two.

At first I thought that the problem was because I unplugged the power to my WD black drive while the computer was running because it was too loud, data wasnt writing and I didnt see why I couldnt unplug it. At first I thought that was why I was getting chk disk; but I have left the drive plugged in for a few days now and I still have the same problem.

Randomly unplugging a drive while your PC is on is not something you should do, and is possibly the cause of your problem.

The only way I know you can test that theory is to format and reinstall Windows and see if the problem goes away.

That's probably not the cause of your problems, however, you really shouldn't do that. Just because you're not actively writing to the drive doesn't mean Windows isn't updating something within the filesystem like some files atime, automated defrag, etc.

Its my storage drive though. I will wait a few days and hopefully it goes away. I just wanted to make sure im not setting something that I should with SSD since it is my first one. So far I have had my bios set to AHCI before I installed the OS but nothing else.

Repeated power cycling of an ssd can induce controller panic and brick the drive so keep that in mind. As for check disk try running it with the repair flags and let it fix the problems.

I never pulled the power from the SSD, only from the storage drive.


It seems to be that the ssd is going to die. I just got corrupt file warnings while in windows, I knew ocz didnt have the best reputation for reliability but at $40 it was hard to resist. As more reviews of this drive come in it looks worse and worse.

I went ahead and bought the crucial m4. It was $40 more but well worth it for reliability alone (95% 4/5 star reviews out of 179 reviews @ newegg). Should be faster too which never hurt anyone.

The M4 is one of the best all around most reliable SSD drives on the market. And with the new 009 firmware its also one of the fastest. Good choice...
