I'm looking to build my first media server pc, budget-mid range. I've been tons of gaming pc's in the past, usually going with budget/performance. Do the same rules apply when building a server pc? What guidelines should I follow when choosing hardware for a server pc vs gaming pc?

for just media serving, the rules are similar, but you want to take into account that the PC will proberly be running 24/7 instead of a few hours each day, so need to take into account heat (cooling/noise) and power usage.

then storage needs in case you want to add extra drives in future.

look for a motherboard that as onboard video, as most media servers are headless / remotly controlled via network once setup.

ram depends on which OS you would be using, otherwise only a Gig or two does the job for most. OS'.

 Stability, low noise, and low power usage are more important than raw performance for a server.
