I've been reading Anandtech articles for a while now, so when they asked for help I decided to Join.

Too bad they didn't write the article a month earlier, while i had a network up still. But i just moved to an apartment, and only have space for one baby.

Right now, i'm running Win Me. I've tried Caldera and Redhat linux b4, but had a million hardware problems. I have a Tbird 1Ghz Asus Av7, 256 PC-133 RAM, Soundblaster 5.1 Plat. Zoltrix Tv Tuner, hp 8210 CDRW, DVD drive, network card, and an Additional ATI MACH 64 for dual monitor output. Is the S@H for linux that much faster? is it worth installing linux just for that? i have a 2nd hard drive also, so that could be dedicated to linux but so much headaches last time... also, is win 98 faster? coz thats already installed in the 2nd harddrive...

I'm trying to get my P3 800 back also...

Hi littleprince and Welcome to the TeAm! Interesting question! Poof, one of our members, has found that the Wine emulator runs the windows client faster in emulation mode than the Linux client runs in native mode. So, I see no reason to switch if you have WinMe installed. Especially if you have a stable system with MinMe!!

Again Welcome!

I don't believe so ,I don't think Linux holds much of an advantage for SETI anymore. That's what I gather anyway ,anyone else?

But don't the Linux clients have less slowdowns with the low angle-range WU's Assim?

True ,but I don't think that is worth setting up another HDD for it ,especially if its gonna be aggro! ;).

Hey Poof you needed!:)

If you're looking to run an OS so SETI runs faster I'd opt for Win2000Pro before Linux. It's a familiar interface, is more popular, and has better driver support. Since it's based on NT it doesn't have the Low Angle Range WU problems of Win9x/ME. I dual boot my home machine. Win2000 for everything but gaming. Win98SE for that. It works out well.

:) Welcome to the TA SETI Team! :)
