My new PS3 has system software version 3.40. Should I update it? It won't let me get to the PSN without updating unless there is a workaround.

I won't have any games for at least a week. Is there a small game demo that is worth trying? If so, what would you recommend? I only have a 3mbps adsl connection.

Unless you're not wanting to update your PS3 for certain *ahem* reason, I don't know why you'd even ask if you should.

You'll need to be up to date with the latest firmware to play games online, and to even be able to access the PSN store, as you've seen, so you might as well get the update.

Almost all of the major titles have demos available, so go nuts at the PSN store.

Thanks for the quick replies. I didn't know if there was a workaround or not. I'm new to this and am not familiar with all of the menu options.

I'll go ahead and update and see if I can find a demo.

Also, how safe is it to purchase games through the PSN? I'm talking about entering and/or storing a debit card number on the console. Again, I'm very new to this.

Safer than a PC, that's for sure.

If you don't feel safe putting your credit card in, you can always go buy the cards at stores.

You should always update to the latest firmware (unless there is a major flaw w/ a firmware that can brick your system) as it provides the latest options, functions, updates, etc.

Buying stuff off of PSN store is very safe. The only problem is trying to add a CC to your account can sometimes be troublesome. I've had issues trying to get my CC's address verified and it was painful. Some ppl have the issue, many others do not.
