Hey gang,

I want to setup some P2P software to get in on the bandwagon finally, but I haven't been on a pc much since a couple of years ago (I've been a mac guy for years).

I won't waste everyone's time explaining my whole scenario, but basically I'm about to build a new pc and want to set it up for all my home recreation (HTPC, gaming, surfing) needs and want to include some P2P software so I can explore that world a little.

My questions are:

What are the current best P2P apps to use judging by ease of use and speed?

Can someone explain bit torrents to me and tell me how to set that up? I've done a little research and am really new to what that is....seems more involved than KazaaaLite ever was.

What other sites or forums are the best to get added info on P2P and bittorrent stuff?

Thanks you guys, I appreciate your help.

I should have the new PC built in the next week to two weeks (A64 2800+ or 3200+..depends on a few things, 1 Gig RAM, DVD-+R/W, Ti4200 for now, 6600 AGP later, and a 21" CRT for the games, a 32" TV for the Home Theatre, which is also connected to a Dolby Digital receiver and top end speakers)

Stay away from any thing kazaa, some of the new kazaalites are worse than the real thing (not made by the same people, kazaa shut the real lite people down a while back because they were infringement on Kazaa's holdings.

this is what you should use if you are going to file share:

Azureus

the MPAA shut down most popular torrent sites. People were using it to steal stuff and the legit people that download freeware mods for games are now forced to use slow mirrors or to wait in line at fileplanet :(

Do not use P2P networks to steal. If you want something, buy it and dont try to download it or you will probably end up in my Malware Thread.

What was the best site?

Any chance it will go back up?

Thanks you guys, I'll look into those suggestions.

What else though? There's got to be a bunch of options I would think....

Thanks again,

I'd suggest that you evaluate some of the next-generation technologies that let you chat, blog & share privately with your friends and interest groups. If you have to think *really* hard about possible legal uses for the software you're installing, you should probably avoid it.
