Hello there,

As I wanted a new PC and had some time on my hands I thought I'd have a go at building a water cooled machine I could over clock.

It's not going so well though. At nearly all FSB speeds the machine either won't post or boot windows. I've seen people on here with 400Mhz and above FSB but all I can get is 350Mhz.

Have I just been unlucky in the parts I've got or am I doing something wrong.

Bios is 1002
Asus Striker extreme
ram is at 5:4 giving 1120Mhz DDR ram
Ram is OCZ Flex 1150

Can people put what other (faster) settings they think should post and boot or can anyone see something obvious I'm doing wrong.

Don't take this as the extreme truth, but a few things I simply noticed is the low voltage, and the high rated fsb speed. Tried upping the vcore(s) voltages yet ? What abt trying a different divider on your ram ? And did you try using a higher multiplier ?

On a sidenote, do you NEED to oc that rig lol :p

I built it with trying my hand at overclocking it has rediculous amounts of radiators.

The vcore is 1.5v up from the default of 1.35v is this not enough?

The striker extreme is not a high fsb board for quadcore chips.

350 is pretty good for this board.

if you want 400+, you need to get an Asus P5B Deluxe, Asus Commando, Abit QuadGT, eVGA 680i A1/T1 board.

these are the ones that are known to do over 400+ easy or if you can find the GTL mod for the striker then you can do it and get higher FSB's with this board.

At 3.5ghz your as high as I've seen anybody get with a quad, don't think you will get any higher with out phase change cooling. What are your load temps at that speed?

Your expectations of 400mhz ie.. 4ghz are unrealistic to say the least

Agreed... but he can always drop mult to 9x and go for 9 x 400.

Either way, he's limited by the board, if not the chip unless he ups mult to 11 or 12 or 13.

To be honest I think your all right. I re read some of the articles and infact most of them have FSB slower or the same. Some with very high FSB actualy drop the multiplier. See I'm learning alot with your help.

Still would be interested in people posting what combinations of FSB/Multiplyer they think should post and boot.

Now I have to get it to be stable. It's not bad but it does have a random BSOD. Sometimes it does it while I'm just surfing the web sometimes when it's loaded days like today it hasn't done it at all. Yet sunday it did it four times in an hour.

hmz yeah 1.5v should work, cpu-z said it was 1.248 or something, the other proggie showed it being 1.46 which I just noticed. BSOD is usually ram, if not always i think, did you stresstest it at all with orthos, and did you run memtest for your memory ? Sounds like stupid questions, I know ... It could be fixed by upping your rams voltage ...

people on 400fsb+ on all QX's run water.

sorry, but thats all i need to say. You cant run a QX higher then 1.375 on air. Those chips get incredibly hot, that even would bring my watersetup to its knees if i go higher then 1.45.

Your voltage is the major limited factor. After that it might be the board, because only the EVGA has worked out bugs to surpass the 400fsb barrier. on Nvidia 680i

Good luck with asus, there one of the most slowest mobo company to update their bios, however the boards rank amungst one of the most reliable.

Whats funny is that i got flamed for being kinda harsh to you guys on cooling and QX setups. Whats also funny is that in my post before, a lot of people thought i was just being mean. Well i agree with half of them, i was a tad bit mean, but posts like this pop up EVERY week.

Well I am running water cooled. You have actualy quoted the part of the post that says it's water cooled. As I write this it's at 22 degress C.
