New to online gaming: where to get started

I tried playing games online the other day for the first time (MOHAA), and it quickly dawned on me that the vast majority of the places to play online are clan-oriented. It got boring fast. The clan players are obviously very skilled and being on the "other" team doesn't make for any competition.

I'm a decent player, but not l33t. Are there places to play online at my level? And how do you find them, other than gamespy?

do you have any other games you can play online?

i usually only play against my friends because we are all on the same level.

are there no beginner games on the servers you check? the battle.net servers have many beginner games for starcraft and warcraft that i still play in.

my sister's boyfriend plays mohaa i think. i can find out if he's in a clan or not and maybe give you his screenname if you want.

I only have MOHAA (AA and Breakthrough).

The UT/Warcraft type games aren't my style, but I appreciate the suggestions.

I wouldn't say I suck, but it's not competitive being the non-clan team against a clan team.

Clan members know the maps inside and out, they have already planned what each of them are going to do, and they are able to shoot with 99% accuracy while jumping out of windows. I don't find it exciting to sit in one place for 5 minutes waiting for someone to go past a particular spot, but they don't seem to mind.

I was hoping to find out how to find places to play that would be more competitive.

if you're playing MOHAA, then it seems to me that you might be slightly interested in WWII shooters...in that case;

RUN to the store and buy Call of Duty...it is a great game, and is very fun to play online (IMO)

I'd start with UT2k4, since there are little/no clans. Find a good pub and stick with it.

Negative. Between finding a server with no lameass modifications running, finding a server that isn't too lame, finding a server with no cheating problem, finding a server at your skill level, and finding a server with a nice ping, you still have to deal with the fact that it's a crappy mod.

I prefer Call of Duty to BF1942, although BF is a fine game. I think that CoD just has more of a cinematic feel to it (feels like you're playing through Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers).

THANK YOU!!!
You deserve a  for that remark!!

Rule of thumb for LAN party server admins:
Quakers don't whine, they just get on with it
UT and BF1942 players whine a little but not all that much
CS players... you got some good earplugs??

true that....basically, it feels like all good WWII movies from the past few years rolled into a game
