New to Networking, Problems & one way connection...

I'm quite new to networking and am having a problem. I am linking only 2 systems, the main one running Win 2K with service pack, the second Win98SE. The Win 2k system can see and open files on the other system, and it is set up for sharing. On the second system when I try to log on the network I get a network error. I have set up all the protocols, and settings that I can think of and still no luck. BTW I'm using the Intel cards in both systems with a crossover cable.
One other question, the reason I'm running Win 98SE is that a number of my applications won't operate on Win 2k. This is in a small office and I don't have the option to replace them. One is a fax program. My question is, is there anyway to view the faxes on the main system while running the prog. on the 2nd system. I tried opening the program on the main system but got an error message. Any way to do this?
Thanks in advance for your help.
