2007.5 Aprilia Tuono

I was shopping monsters, but the S2R's are slow and handle a little funny. The S4R's are nice but still have chasis issues and cost way too much :)

the new monsters were more than I wanted to spend, so I found this gem instead.

Its basically an Aprilia RSV 1000 R, nakified :D

~150hp/~86ft/lbs ~440lbs wet.

Rotax built 60 deg V-Twin

so much fun. I missed my SV1000 so much for daily riding when I got the R6, and its so much more comfortable and so much more power on tap all the time, no more cruising around changing gears all the friggin time.

bike #9 enters the fold. still have bike #3 too, but it doesnt run and is in pieces now

here is one from the PO:

he parted out most of the carbon, I didnt need it, and it cost way too much

it has the ohlins on back from the factory edition, arrows(obviously), DJ PCIII, sliders, and wheels from an RSV1000R. and aftermarket bars. pretty much stock other than that

I don't like the looks, because I don't like the looks of any sport bike, but 86 pounds of torque and a 150 pony's is nothing to sneeze at. I would so love to thrash that for a day.

Aprilia's are such good looking bikes and have tons of trick parts straight from the factory. I'm just afraid of parts availability and there aren't many aprilia dealers around so who knows if they try to ream you out just cause they can.

Dude, nice first bike...but you should have sprung for the Turbo Busa!!!

LOL for real, its way too slow, but I'm glad I didnt settle for a 600SS for my first ride!

yeah, factory ohlins are nice, parts prices are frankly, insane. There is a dealer with a great great great rep 2 hours away, that does some lower level 'factory' race support. so that should be really helpful. and as best as I could find, the RSV/Tuono are pretty darned reliable. no weird issues that should require lots of dealer visits.

I'm curious, what chassis issues does the S4R have?

from what I understand, the frame will flex some under hard cornering, which can unsettle you a bit. really its an issue with that whole gen, as the frame wasnt designed with the S's in mind.

would I ever notice? probably not, but the premium on the S4R's is so high that i decided they werent worth it :)

I could get a less used 2010 Monster 1100S for less. atleast around me.

and ya know, I see a monster almost every day around town, so they are too pedestrian for me :D the real reason I sold my R6 is someone else in town bought a 50th anniversary edition, and well, I just couldnt stand it.

hehehehehehehe obviously not serious

I was wondering why you said that because I was talking to the owner of my local Ducati dealer and he said basically the same thing, that the chassis wasn't up to the level of performance the engine could deliver. He said the new Monsters have a much better chassis.

I didn't know if he was bullshitting me but I didn't get the impression that he was...and I'm a pretty good judge of bullshit. ;)

By the way, check into the expanding fuel tank issue many European brands are experiencing. If your tank is made of plastic the ethanol we put in our gas here makes the tanks swell up over time. My friend has a Ducati Sport Classic and his tank had expanded almost an inch over the course of 3 years. He took it off, let it sit and dry out for a couple weeks and it shrunk back down a bit, then he coated the inside with this Caswell epoxy.

yeah, I was looking at them and my buddy who has the M1100S showed me an article about it. he had found out the same thing looking at S4r's before he bought his 1100.

I will check into my gas tank, boy would that be a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch! I had heard about some of the 1098's having an issue with them but that was all

Pretty much all Ducati motorcycles with the plastic tanks (which is pretty much all late model Ducati motorcycles) are prone to this issue. Also, Triumph, BMW, Aprilia, and other European brands source their tanks from this supplier. People with Monsters (many different years and models), 1098s, 1198s, Sport Classics, you name it have reported this problem. Not all owners are reporting this problem either but then some of them simply may not have noticed it yet.

Ducati has been slow to react but has said recently that it will replace tanks of those with bikes that have been affected. Of course, the replacement tanks are the same as the ones that were warping so there is no reason to assume the issue will ever go away entirely.

I helped my friend coat the inside of his tank a few weeks ago and those who have done this report no more issues. The resin costs $40 and the process isn't difficult to do yourself. There are several writeups on Ducati.ms or you can send your tank to have it coated.

I'm not saying Aprilia tanks have been affected, just something to watch out for.
