Dunno why there are so many of these "Free Linux download" posts, that's kinda the whole point of Linux - it's free (in both ways).

The only [kinda] non-free Linux is LindowsOS.

For noobs, I'd say certainly not Fedora, probably Mandrake, maybe SuSe.

most distros mentioned are for technically savvy people who spend probably 70% of thier computing time with linux. But for beginners who want to wade into linux only a few distros are newbie friendly :)

What about Lycoris or Xandros or PCLinuxOS or even Lindows?

Actually, there alot of "desktop" or windows friendly distros on the market. Just find one and try it out. Even Mandrake and Fedora are really window friendly and have the backing of larger companies.

If you really want to find out what the distros are like and what they can do, try checking out. DistroWatch.

Sometimes the DL sucks...I have dsl and with Mandrake it took like 3 weeks to get a good complete DL of the 2 cd's.

So mabye it this is just a single cd it has another advantage.

Single CD solutions that I found were much better and user friendly to set up:

MEPIS
Knoppix

On top of that, they are both Debian based - the easiest Linux distro for a Windows migrator. And Free. And only 1 CD.... Fedora hates my machine, and I can't stand Mandrake (I don't know why. Maybe it's their bastardization of RPM\apt - urpmi.

I started using Knoppix as a cluster server...I love it

its worth differentiating between a linux n00b and a computing n00b

if you have reasonable technical experience with any other OS, then it doesn't really matter which distrobution you use. I installed gentoo as my first linux experience a few weeks ago, and have no problems with it.

Knoppix pwnz :) Seriously, you just stick a CD in, and nothing is installed or changed on your hard drives. Boot from CD to linux. Take it out and you are back to windows or whatever, nothing changed. Granted, a differant version of linux that installs to your hdd is probably better in most cases, but for casual people new to linux who want to try it with ZERO risk of messing up things, knoppix is it.

You can also install it to a hard drive (I'm running from my hard drive right now)

Linux is pretty cool, and the "livebootable cd" types like Knoppix and Dyne;bolic are nice to tech with. If you
want a place to dl some distributions or read up on them, you should check out <ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/> which has dozens of dl's to choose from. there is also a readme that takes you to some descriptions of the distros. Mandrake is my fave and Knoppix for the cd bootable. Gentoo and Red Hat are also good for n00bs.
