Hi Guys I just got all my equiptment sitting in front of me and I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction to get started.

I have a Abit IS7 board, P4 2.4c 800mhz fsb with Hyperthreading, and 512MB of HyperX PC3500.

I'd like to hit at least 3.0ghz if possible, but don't need to go crazy squeezing out the last mhz of fsb.

The main thing I don't understand coming from AMD land is this ration thing. 4:5 1:1?? whats that all about?

Also how about memory timings what should I use?

Lastly does this board have any performance, booster, or auto type settings I should be turning off?

If anyone has a similiar rig I'd like to hear what setttings you have. Maybe I could just plugin your numbers and go from there. I'm bought this machine exclusively to encode tons of MPEG1 video captures so every little bit of fsb and cpu speed would help, but I don't want to melt down my new stuff either.

Thanks allot in advance for all your help!!

First of all, I recommend just setting it to default and letting it burn in for 48 hours. That way you can identify any issues without blaming overclocking.

The ratio steps down (or up) the ram speed. If you set the NB Strap to 800, then you will see some ratio's:

1:1 Will sync the ram to the fsb exactly.
5:4 Will multiply the bus speed by 4 and divde it by 5 so you can "down clock" the ram. For example, you set the bus to 250MHz and the ratio to 5:4. This will put the DDR at 400 MHz. Unless you have REAL good ram, you'll probably have to use the 5:4 setting to get to 3 GHz.

Anytime you see a ratio, you simply multiply the fsb speed by the second number and divide by the first to calculate the ram speed.

1. Update to the most recent bios.
2. Turn off any on-board devices that you will not be using.
3. Set it to manual for fsb and memory
4. Change the fsb to 250 using default vcore
5. Set the memory ratio to 5:4 = DDR400 @ 250fsb
6. Set the vdimm to 2.80v and timings to 2-2-2-5-Auto
7. Boot using a bootable floppy with memtest86 and run all 11 tests (C,2,3,space bar)
That should get you a minimum OC to start. Tweak and increase from there, assuming no errors in memtest.

actualy it should be, c, 1,2,2,3,0, spacebar i think for memtest86

anyways, for a newbie guide to go mywebsite in sig > content > wayy down at the bottom

make sure u understand what at least most of the settings u will be messing wtih do

also, first i recommend making the ram timings to the biggest numbers available...just to avoid any ram problems if you can

That's not a good ideal, some ram doesnt even boot up the system when set to cas3.
