New to DVD burning: Can you just burn a file in MPEG format or do you need to convert it to VOBs and IFOs ?

Can you just burn it as is in mpeg format or must you convert it to VOBS and IFOs before a home dvd player can read it?

You have to author the mpeg-2 file using a program such as DVDAuthor or TMPGENC DVD Author, as far as I know at least.
