New to Droid & Used Incredible 1 - TIPS PLEASE

I just picked up a used HTC Droid Incredibe 1 on eBay as a first foray into Android for me. I'm on Verizon.

Any tips? I'm excited about learning about optimizing, tweaking, rooting & romming!

Thanks,
CxP

Stock battery life was terrible for me. I run Cyanogen 7.03 right now and battery life is very good. I don't know how this compares to the stock Gingerbread build since I've run Cyanogen since Android 2.1. With light use, I can easily get 24+ hours from the battery.

Stock battery size is 1300mah, but you can use a 1500mah battery that barely fits in the stock back cover. Look for "HTC RHOD160," but realize that almost all of the listings that you will find are probably fake Chinese knock-offs. I would expect this to cost $15-$20, so anything less that that may be suspect.

The incredible is still a good phone. I love the size since I'm a dude and I don't want a mega-purse-size-phone.

1. Buy a new 1500 mAh OEM battery, only OEM like Binky said.
2. Enroll in XDA forums.
3. Install Cyanogen.
4. Install Tower Raiders 2 when you need to kill huge chunks of time.

This guy tested the Seidio to be about the same as the 1500 OEM batttery (TP2 OEM in this list). The OEM batteries are all rated near their actual capacity. The aftermarket batteries have a tendency to be grossly overrated.

If you want a lot more capacity and don't mind the phone getting a little bigger, the OEM 2150 from Verizon is supposed to be pretty good. It comes with a larger back cover so many cases won't fit.

Great to know. Where have you bought a good 1500 OEM? I don't want to make the phone bigger and I can charge during the day.

Can I charge the incredible by plugging into a USB port? I don't have my monitor USB ports connected for data but I use one to charge up the battery on my Palm Pre.

Reputable sites, such as Amazon. If the battery is below $25, stay away. I think battery prices went up a little. The battery code RHOD posted earlier is I believe an abbreviation of Rhodium, which is the Touch Pro 2's code name, either it's that phone's battery or just a major coincidence.

You can charge via USB but know that it takes a little longer to charge compared to using the actual charger.

I am assuming you'll install a custom Gingerbread ROM, preferably CM7. Don't listen to noobs if they advise you use a task manager, since Froyo they are obsolete.

Once you get CM7 on it and customized to your liking, you should have sophisticated looking speedster that can hang with the newer models. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it?

Right on, now that's a good deal.

1500mAh OEM battery should be awesome on your 3.7" and a good ROM can ensure you only charge once a day.

You can always do CM7 if you don't like the Sense ROM. That thread you linked has frequent posts, that's always a good thing.

I prefer tweaks and ROMS from XDA, in my experience they have more bugs ironed out compared to others. Key benefit of your phone is that as a new Android user, you don't have to do trial and error yourself when customizing, it's probably been done by others many times. because it's so popular. I'm grateful for XDA forums, reading and asking there saved me a lot of trial and error stress.

When you use Sense especially the 3.5 version, pay attention to RAM usage, it's known to be quite a resource hog. If you notice battery life is an issue, get the free current widget and log your power draw. It's one of the reasons I went with CM7, IMO, it's a more efficient and performance oriented.

Again, I must emphasize, read the XDA forums it will save you a lot of time tweaking the phone to your liking. Keep us updated on your progress.

Sense was never good for me. There's too much real estate on the home screen devoted to those silly arc-shaped icons. I strongly prefer a homescreen replacement like ADW or GOlauncher. Since CM7 comes by default with an integrated ADW, that's what I use.

CM7 plus this theme and you're set with a nice clean interface. I dig the little circle in the middle. It's a nice touch. The pics on the market page don't do it justice since they use thos terrible blue icons. Turn off the horrid blue icons (uncheck "use theme icons").

I am loving CM7! Based on my moderate usage for the past 5hr 20min, I can expect 18.4 hours from the 1500 battery.
