new to DC (future TeAm Anandtech member) !

well im new to the DC scene and im eager to get started. im not sure which project i want to get started on yet =( i was wondering what you guys thought ? which ones are the most popular ?? any questions or comments feel free to ask =)

McFly !

Our SoB project really needs help. TPR is leaving us in their dust :|

But the choice is really all up to you. You'd have our support no matter which project you choose.

Forgot, it can be downloaded here
Other projects include the ever popular SETI. Folding at Home, DPAD, TSC, and all the rest are in the sticky on top of this forum 🙂.

also forgot the computer that will be running DC the most (sometimes will get some of my other computers into it) has the option of running it on Win98se or RedHat 9 not sure which one will be better.

I myself think 98se will be easier to set up any DC project. But many people swear by linux. In truth, they run the clients as well as the other. I doubt you'll see a difference in speed.

If you are somewhat familiar with Linux, and are not afraid to delve into the realms of vi and init scripts, then Linux would be a better choice than Windows 98, due to stability, security, and performance. However, if you have the option, Windows 2000 or XP would probably be your best bet, because it's almost as stable and secure as a normally-configured average Linux box, and it's a lot easier to use for someone who's grown up on Windows. 🙂

Concerning DC projects, I am a participant of Folding@Home (I do a bit of DPAD on the side, and have helped with SETI, ECCP, and RC5 in the past), and have enjoyed all of the time I've spent here with these fine teammates, no matter what project I've been crunching. Right now, Folding@Home is my "thing," because it does cancer, alzheimer's (sp?), and other medical research (this strikes close to home because I've got grandparents who have something similar to alzheimers). Also, Team AnandTech (known as ID# 198 in the F@H stats) has not been doing really well, and is about to drop from 22nd to around 27th or 28th if we do not increase our production.

You will be welcomed and appreciated no matter which project you choose to run 🙂

I think you will find that there is the best bunch of people here on TeAm AnandTech, which is the reason why I'm still here over 2 years and 6 thousand posts to the DC forum later.

Many of the current popular projects are Seventeen or Bust, Seti@Home, Folding@Home, Distributed Folding to name but a few.

I personally run Seventeen or Bust. We (Anandtech) are in 2nd overall, and were looking at taking 1st in a month, until TeamPrimeRib, who are in first, stepped up their rate to almost, and often, twice ours. We have also been out-produced by ORU, who are likely to pass us soon too.

There has just been a new client released for Windows, along with a new-and-improved Service Handler included. This can allow you to run the client at absolute lowest priority (should you find it inteferes with anything, which I doubt you would anyway) and monitors/restarts the service if the client is stalled (happens occasionally) and can allow you to run it without needing to be logged on, which is an advantage for running it on a 2k/XP box with multiple users at home or in an office environment 🙂

As I said, whichever project you wish to run, welcome to Team Anandtech 😀

BTW, are you a Back To The Future fan? I ask because of your nickname, which is a line from BTTF, "Hello McFly, anybody home" when Biff/Griff is talking to George or Marty 🙂 In case you couldn't guess from knowing that trivia, I love the BTTF Trilogy, they're my favourite films ever!!

If you are just starting out, it might be an opportune time to give Distributed Folding (DF) a try. We are just ending a major phase and the second will
be starting in a week or less. I think it's fun to be in on one from the start!

I like the science projects the best (purely personal preference) and share my computers with Folding@Home and DF.

There are so many good ones here.....

My advise is read the stickied threads, if a project sounds attractive, go to the site and you will usually find a forum where you can poke around a bit and really get the flavor of how a project is getting along.

you might find lots of grumbling about client problems, or lots of praise for the founders. Dulldrums or excitement..... the entire gambit is out there.

You can also get the gist of a team by browsing the threads here at AT and get to know us a bit. Sometimes a particular group is as attractive as a particular project. Be warned.... I DEFY YOU to find a group here at TeAm Anandtech that you wouldn't be pleased to call buddies 😀

Best of luck!

(don't hesitate to experiment around for a while.... try one..... try another.... try yet one more...... you will probably find one that 'calls your name'

ok i got seti running on a computer and it seems ok..

but now i want to get SoB running ! but.. i cant get it to connect..

once i get that running im gona look into RC5 or ECC2 - those sound kinda cool to me. maybe Distributed Folding ..

I have tried a variety of DC's, but I always return to RC5. Probably because it was my first one, but I still find that it is the simplest, most efficient, and best supported client I've worked with. You can run it on just about any OS, and in Windows it can be hidden or not, run as a service, and always takes lowest priority for the proc. Just my two cents.
