First time poster here, I joined in hopes of getting more information on building my first gaming machine.

I haven't been much of a gamer, but as I am getting older, I find myself hanging around home more, so I figured why not build a bad a** machine that can handle anything I want?

Can anyone point me into the right direction to find some killer deals on parts, and possibly some advise on how to learn which processors, and boards I will need.

I would like to be able to play a game like battlefield 4 on high settings.

Budget is probably going to be around 2K MAX, Id like to spend half that, but I understand it may be a costly build to perform like I want it to as well as last through upcoming years.

Thanks!

Well screw asking questions and going into detail,

i5 4670k w/ CM 212 EVO or better
good Z87 MOBO
2x8GB 1866 CAS 9 or better
good 256GB SSD or better
1-4 TB HDD storage
R9 290
good 650w PSU or better
good case
CD/DVD/OS

Should run about $1500

You might want to wait for third party GPU's, the stock cooler on the R9 290 can become loud at high speeds. Aftermarket coolers are usually better with greater cooling and less noise. Sometimes with higher clock speeds and better overclocking, should be available in a month or two.

Larger SSD is never a bad idea.

This PC should handle anything at 1080p maxed out.
Add a second R9 290 in CF (and a good ~1kw PSU) for maxed play at 1440/1600p.

Yes you could get away with less...maybe a lot less. But I don't feel like rewriting everything again.

Look at the games you want to play now and spec a box using the *recommended* specs. You'll need a decent case and about a 650W PSU to cover the components. Blu Ray drive will let you play discs on the nice monitor/TV you're going to hook it up to. If Your preference for games might be something that isn't CPU/GPU killing. Once that is done assure you've left some headroom on the motherboard to plug in higher level CPUs if you can, though GPU will typically be the binding item. The SSD will give you faster load times on the games you want to play. You won't have to wait as the system refreshes to move into the next portion of extended maps or between levels.

Depending on your space, plan on at least a nice 24 monitor, or you can consider a larger monitor (27s run about $600) or shop for a low latency TV depending on your response time requirements. I use my monitor for some games, but hook up my PC to my 50" Panny plasma for driving sims. The TV feels like a windshield...works very well.

Good advice. I haven't started the build yet as I had to get some holiday shopping out of they way.

I did however order a few parts that I know I will be using.

I picked up a SSD http://www.atdcomputers.com/proddetail.asp?prod=mz-7te500bw for around $322. From what I read the EVO series is a good choice in between the pro and regular 840's.

I think I am going to use an i7, so I was looking at this board that NewEgg offers : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131837

$129 doesn't seem like a bad price, and I did a little research to find that board. Would the above board with an i7, lets say a i7-3770K be a good start?

Also, how is the Ballistix 16GB kit 1600 RAM? I found a nice deal on that and would like to snag it up as well if it is a good choice.

The ballistix are fine. Any particular reason you're going with a last gen cpu/socket?
this thread should probably be in general hardware ;)

the sticky thread in general hardware for ~$1k builds.

good places to look for deals:
anandtech hot deals forum
slickdeals.net
fatwallet.com
microcenter (if you're lucky enough to live near one) has the best (in store only) mobo + cpu combo deals

Most of the parts that you chose here are not what he would want. And most of this stuff is completely overkill.
