hi, i'm new to the AMD world, thought i'd try one out. i'm {} this close to buying the Outpost combo $199 combo for XP1700 and Soyo board but I don't know if there's any hidden costs that i don't know about.

[does the outpost deal come with thermal compound? ]

I figure i'd have to buy the combo, the ddr2100 memory (~$100-$200), use old hd/monitor/video/nic/sound

what about fans?.. i've heard AMD's ran hotter than Intel chips, should i invest in extra cooling? i don't plan on OCing (for a while at least)

thanks for the help

*also, fry's has 2100 ddr memory for $59, is it worth it to fork over cash to crucial for "better" memory?

I'd go from Crucial memory, but that's just me. I'm not sure about the Outpost deal, but if the XP is a retail one then it will come the HSF and a thermal pad. If it's an OEM CPU, then you'll have to buy a HSF and thermal goop. To decide if you need extra cooling we need to know more about your setup. What case? How many fans? What else is running? ect.

Hope that helps you some.

From www.newegg.com, buy:
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ OEM
Epox 8KHA+ Motherboard
Alpha Pal8045 Heatsink (w/o fan)

From www.coolerguys.com, buy:
Any 80mm Fan for your heatsink.

Alpha Pal8045 and 80mm fan is I think the best cooling devices you can get. It keeps the CPU temp really low. I love it. It's kinda of expensive though.

AMD Athlon XP 1700+
EPoX 8KHA+

I agree 100%. If you aren't looking for RAID, that's one of the best combos out there. The cpu is cheap now (and most can overclock to 1900+ range, np) and the mobo is one of the best KT266A boards money can buy. I have my 1700+ running at 1650 with no problems on my EPoX. I personally prefer the SK6 for cooling, but the Alpha is just as good.
