The Road Safety Teen Driver system is coming out this month. It's a $280 box that connects to a car's electrical system and monitors the way the car is driven. Not only does it sound alarms when it detects unsafe driving, it records data on a memory card that the parents can review on a PC.

The company's president says, "Trust me when I say that you would be shocked to see how fast and how aggressively teenagers drive when you are not in the car with them. If you knew, you would take the keys to the car and throw them away forever."

You teen drivers out there, don't forget to show the link to your parents! They'll thank you!

Today I was walking back from school, and I saw these two idiots in a toyota. It was raining so the roads were slippery. This guy was going atleast 45 by an elementry school and then he swirved his car and just floored it. If some kids were trying to cross the street, that idiot would have killed them. I hate people who act like idiots and think they are just bad@sses

I would be soooo grounded if those boxes came dealer-installed.

I don't drive perfectly, but I don't drive stupidly either...

I'm sure as a parent I wouldn't mind, but me being a teen, I don't really think it's necessary for myself anyways. Never know though.

I think this idea is great!

Too late for my 'teenager' who is now 37, but I'll look into it for my 15 year old grandson that lives with us 24/7 and will be getting his license and using our cars soon.

(Please get ready for - "You have no right to spy on me if I haven't done anything wrong yet.")

This is nothing new. Products like this have been available for a very long time. Perhaps not well known, but they have been available. Some cars even come with things like this stock.. like some BMW and GM cars I believe.

I wonder if evidence from the memory card can be used in court? It would be great if you could proove that's you weren't speeding, etc :)

i must not be a very good liberal, because i've always liked the idea of something like this. most teenagers i knew growing up drove like shlt, but they wouldn't have if this had been installed. it doesn't matter how much you trust your teenager, you will never know for sure how they drive without you. with this, it's like your always in the car so they'll never drive dangerously.

one last comment: to anyone who would say that this is big brotherish, or impedes rights, would you want this installed in your teenager's car to ensure they're driving safely? or would you rather take your chances and let them possibly learn the hard way that driving unsafe leads to more accidents?

I am not doubting you at all, and I know that some high-end cars have this technology, but I thought it was only accessible in case of an accident.
If you have any more information on this subject, I would greatly appreciate it.

This device is much different from the Collision Data Recorders in use today. They only record data in the event of a crash that forces the air bags to deploy, and even then only the last 5-10 seconds.

There have been devices like this for a while (specifically for teen drivers, not for CART), but this is much cheaper than the ones I have seen previously.

Thankfully my parents never had one.

hell when I was a teenager,if my old man had seen the way I drove, he would have yanked my 1st car away from me the 2nd day I owned it;)
however, since the parent is responsible for the actions of the teen (under 18) then imho, the parent has every right to place them under surveillance...once they turn 18 AND in their own car, then they can start talkling about privacy
