New thermal stuff needed for cpu?

I read in a few places that people have added new thermal compound to the cpu after taking off to look at it or fix it or whatever, is this neccisary? I took apart my old pc and took the processor out and poked the white goo on the processor then put it all back togather again so do i need to put on new thermal goo? and if so do i need to clean off the original goo or is mixing it with new goo ok?

As long as there is good coverage, technically you don't need new compound applied, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt. If/when you do put on new TIM, clean off the old stuff off the CPU and heatsink well with high % Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol) and let it dry off then apply a nice thin layer of the new stuff.
