too bad the WMV9 version can't be played on a standalone dvd player and take advantage of the high quality.

New DVD players will have a chip in them with the codec, if i remebr right there are some 15 manufacturers on board.

Give us some links mofo :)

I haven't read anything about the new players including the codec. I guess only MS is powerful enough to get companies to adopt it. Especially considering that DIVX has been out for so long. I am not trying to say that DIVX is anywhere close to this technology but you can't deny that bitrate for bitrate divx puts mpeg2 to shame.

Oooo... watching a DVD on a computer monitor! <blech>

Let me know when they have some consumer level HDTVs that will display 1080p...

Well you could output the video signal to a TV. I know that some video cards have component outputs and combined with the digital outs on most sounds cards you could have a nice looking movie. Of course my 27inch tv will see no benefit from this technology.

1080P? Dayamn...

Too bad there are no TV's that can make use of that.

I suppose a nice projector could though...

Not so fast...

AFAIK, this set will not accept a 1080p input. It will accept 720p and 1080i and upconvert to 1080p.

It's true.

That set is also discontinued, and a replacement is slated for September. (likely supporting 1080p and 1440i)
