Guys, I haven't had or built a PC since before socket 940. What is in store for me now, I plan to make a build in the next coming weeks.

Intel Core 2 Duo is all the rage now. It used to be all about AMD. Get ready for this to change in about 3 months.

OK outerheaven, I give up <g>. What's going to change in 3 months that will affect the current balance between Conroe and AMD? I've heard nothing about an AMD "Conroe killer." Is there something magical on the horizon that no one knows about? I sure hope you're not referring to Vista - for all practical purposes it seems like a "non-starter," IMO.

I just built a new computer, Colemont. My first since a P3 700 build. Things I had to learn about:

PCIe
SATA
Dual-channel (RAM)
DDR2 RAM
Socket LGA 775

My build in case you're curious:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Ati x1900xt
2GB DDR2-667 (Corsair ValueSelect)
500w Liberty Enermax
300gb Seagate Barracuda SATA (x2)
Soundblaster XtremeMusic
Gigabyte P965-DS3 (MB)

Took me about a month of reading articles just to piece together "what's going on" since I've missed the past 5 years or so of new computer tech.

Athlon 64 X2 6000+ @ 3.0GHz (2MB L2 cache) for AM2 should be available in November or December this year.

tcsenter, will it be affordable? That's somewhat a rhetorical question, as none of these higher-end processors are. In any event, it's fun to look at what I don't want to afford <g>.
