I just got my WD black and was going to partition it.
I was thinking 200 for my OS/Programs
400 for media/data etc
400 for games (though that seems like a lot for my games)

Any downsides to this?
Any other suggestions?

I did a 200 for OS/apps/games and the rest for storage. You want your games on an outer partition too for faster loading times

or you might want your games on a non OS partition to prevent loss of saves when you format (and set documents to be in the second partition, and set a backup scheme for the right apps data folder).

There is really NO point seperating media/dada and games... you should have two partitons. 1. for OS. (and maybe programs) 2. for everything else.
The reason for that is that you can reformat without loosing your data. There is nothing to back up because everything is on the other partition. Some like the fact that the outer part of the drive is a little faster, although it is not guaranteed that if you make a small partition at the "beginning" it will be on the outer rim... it does TEND to be the case. I honestly don't think the benefit is significant enough to bother.

I recommend a 100GB OS / Program partition and a second partition of "everything else"

My OS drive takes up about 18 gigs of space..

I load games on a different drive and have storage on the largest..

This way if you run a app like Acronis True Image to make a copy of your OS it not giant

I have friends that just installed the OS on a super small partition and all the apps on another and games on still another...

Plus if you run a virus scan your not scanning large amounts of files time after time..

I put my os and core programs -- everything I need to be productive -- on one partition, my documents on a 2nd, and games and media on a 3rd. after I have the system working as I want, I image the os partition so any time I need to I can wipe windows and reimage it. the os partition is the one most likely to get hit/ruined by virus. I also like to just reinstall windows once in a while to clean out the crud.

this makes backup easier too.

oh, i recommend that in addition to the two partitions on your OS Drive (OS partition and everything else partition), you get a second DRIVE for p2p if you do a lot of it. several torrents in the background can kill your performance.

HD tune says 200 gigs was the drop off point for performance so I guess 181.5 is fine.
