New system won't turn on

I just built myself a new system with the following parts from Newegg.com...

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 Wolfdale 2.66GHz LGA 775 Dual-Core Processor Model BX80571E7300 - Retail
SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223F - OEM
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum Bezel , SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail
EVGA 512-P3-N861-TR GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail
Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR800D2N5K2/2G - Retail
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit English 1pk for System Builders DSP OEI DVD - OEM
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

...and after plugging everything in, I found that it won't turn on.

At first, I thought it could be the power button on the case, so I wired my new case to the motherboard on my old computer (the one I'm using now). The system turned on just fine (though I only had it on for a second before shutting it off).

After that, dismayed that it wasn't just the power button, I tried plugging the power supply from my old computer (same model of PSU) into the motherboard on my new computer to see if I could get it to turn on. Now, maybe I did something wrong, but when I pressed the power button on the new computer... nothing happened.

Any suggestions? Could it be that my motherboard is shot? Is there still a chance it's somehow the new power supply?

Thanks!

Pull it out of the case and set it up on the motherboard box. You may have a short somewhere. Make sure that you only have the standoffs needed on the motherboard tray. If you have extra or there is a screw caught under the motherboard it could be shorting the system not allowing it to turn on.

"Standoffs?"

I've been told it's also somewhat odd that absolutely nothing happens when I press the power button?that it seems as if it's unplugged for all the effect it has. FWIW.

Yes, Standoffs.

One other thing I'd consider is if you plugged the Power/HD LED/Reset/etc. wire thingies or the ATX power cable in backwards. You didn't mention your expertise level so I figured I should mention that just in case...

Actually, I have some screw-like things that came with my case that look like that. I wasn't sure what they were for. Was I supposed to use those instead of regular screws to attach my motherboard to my case? 😱 I don't recall using such a thing on my last computer, but I was "recycling" my 7-year-old Alienware case...

My technical ability is rather low. It consists of knowing what things to plug in and how to operate a screwdriver. 🙂

Regarding the "PWR SW" and similar cables, my wife and I deduced from the "+ / - " wires which of the colored wires (one is colored, one is white) is supposed to go on which side. Hypothetically, I only have to have the "PWR SW" one plugged in, correct? If so, I believe we did just that and tried it both ways. Neither did anything for the new computer. (Though, as I said, when I plugged the new case's "PWR SW" cable into my old computer's motherboard, it started up fine, so I must've been doing something right. 🙂 )

You have to install the standoffs between the mobo and chassis. The mobo mounts onto the standoffs with the screws. Sounds like this may be your problem. Only install the standoffs you need.

OMG, I feel like such an idiot. I'll have to give this a try.

I haven't broken anything by using the regular screws, have I?

Only one way to find out 🙂

Well, looks like that was it. I am so embarrassed. I could blame my case's crappy manual, but it's still my fault for not researching enough to know how to do it. 🙂
