New System Too Loud! Which HSF Should I Get?

strugs

Just bought my 1st non-Intel system (have owned a 8086, 286, 486, Pentium and Celeron). It is an AMD 1600 with an ASUS A7V266E Mobo and I am quite happy with the performance. Only problem is that it is LOUD! I have a Volcano 6 HSF and it sounds as loud as a two stroke lawn mower. Can anyone recommend a nice quiet Heat Sink Fan combo?

Also, I am not really thinking of doing much overclocking, but should I install 2 case fans (one blowing in and the other blowing out)? Or is this just going to increse the decibel levels. Are there such things as quiet case fans?

Thanks in advance.

Two case fans...probably a good idea. Panaflow makes great 80mm's that'll do the job nicely (and hush-hush) Unfortunately, with that chip, you need good cooling. The Alpha PAL8045 with a 'whisper-kit' is a fine and wonderfully quiet choice.

The Volcano 6 seems to come with either a 7000 or 4500 RPM fan. I?m going to assume by your description ?LOUD!? that you have the 7000RPM fan, and yeah 7000RPM 60mm fans are pretty annoyingly loud. Personly I don't like Thermaltake too much, they seem way too form over function.

Here are some HS/Fs I'd recomend

Thermal Integration's Dr. Thermal TI-V77L

Alpha PAL8045 ADDA Combo

Alpha PAL6035 ADDA Combo

TAISOL CGK742092

As for case fans, yeah I agree with basilisk420 your really should have an intake and exhaust fan. Panaflows are a very high quality fan as are Adda's and are what I would recommend if what want to go the ultra quite route. If don't have to have a dead silent case Sunon makes some good medium to high speed RPM 80mm fans that would also work well.

Time to consider a P4. The retail HSF is really quite.

Go to Target and get a Black & Decker RTX1 rotary tool for 28.88 + tax. Go to Taco Bell and get an extra large Pepsi. Go to Compusa and get a CompUsa 92mm fan and grills (it uses a 3-pin connector so use an adapter). Cut a hole in the side of your case at the appropriate location, install fan and grills. Install a properly trimmed Taco Bell cup with velcro and velcro strips. Say goodbye and good riddance to your Delta fan and hello to the sound of your hard drives.

Just remember to drink the Pepsi® first.

One more vote for the Alpha. However I like to use the Enermax adjustable fans so I can adjust the fan up if I need a little more cooling. Even at the middle setting these fans are quiet!

I have considered the ducting or fitting a larger fan on a smaller heatsink and the results are not good.

Here are a couple of reviews:

Your best bet is to get the most efficient fan that fits your heatsink and have plently of case ventilation via nice quiet fans like the enermax set to the mid or low setting.

Good luck.

I had considered that sort of ducting too and tried something along those lines and the results were not good. The difference with the blowhole method is that there is more length to your duct and thus a more gradual lessening of the diameter allowing better airflow. Not to mention getting the air onto the cpu directly from outside air. I do recommend a 92mm fan because a) you have sufficicent distance for your duct and b) they usually can run upwards of 42 cfm at a quiet pace.
My results are that my Athlon 1000 oc'd to 1200 at 1.85 v has an idle of 44 c and a max of 48 c. It never varies from this 4 degree range and that is exceptional, probably even better than a 32 c idle and a 42 c max because of the lesser fluctuation. My delta did keep the low temp lower but not the max temp and in fiddling around with everything I slid my SK6 up and down a bit. A reseating and reapplication of AS2 might give even better results. I also discovered that I could run my pc for about a minute with NO FAN with my sk6. I was watching the temp rise in the bios when I noticed the hs fan was not hooked up. That svcker did get hotter after I shut down though. Almost burnt my finger. So, all in all, I get better performance at a lot lower sound volume. The TB cup is great in it's gradual reduction of diameter. I had about 4-5 " from the cpu to the case side.

Im looking for A VERY QUIET HSF combo over a duron 1GHZ, As it is a Duron, Im not quiet familiar with heat issues So I dont know if there as bad as an Athlon for heat or Just a Little better or Alot better, Either way i Need a quiet combo to cover it for a customer.

Also, Could u hook me up some links on where to Buy Adda Fans?

TumBo,
Thanks for the link - too bad they don't have an mp3 for my HSF so I can compare it to others. I did notice that their info on my HSF has a big "caution" on it warning people about the loudness of this fan. I will be taking my rig in to my dealer to see if they can retrofit a quieter HSF and install a couple of case fans. Thanks to all for their suggestions (except for the dude who told me to get a P4 - yah right - like I am going to return my AMD for a higher priced, but lower performing Intel chip).
