Just put together my new comp, following specs:

q6600 B3 stepping, VID 1.3125
Gigabyte p35 DQ6
4 gig gskill ram
8800 gtx (630/2000)
Thermaltake toughpower 750watt psu

I'm using my old sonic tower heatsink with a single 120mm fan.
temps i get @3ghz 1.325 vcore (1.28 effective) (using coretemp and everest)
ambient i think is around 20C

Idle
cpu ~30 C
Cores 1 & 2 around 40C
Cores 3 & 4 around 37C

Load 4 threads of Prime 95 (after more than 30 min when temps settled)
cpu 66
core 1 & 2 at 79C (21C from Tjunction in coretemp)
core 3 & 4 at 71C (29C from Tjunction in coretemp)

Temps seem a bit too high, i've remounted and lapped the heatsink reaplied as5 etc
Case ventilation is not a problem got about 8 fans.

In normal usage (games etc) i don't usually see temps go much above 50C

Just wondering if i should worry about the temps maybe get a new hsf (ultra 120 extreme)?

The thing is that the heatsink just barely gets warm, when i was using it on my old X2 when the cpu got hot so did the heatsink, i'm positive i've mounted it correctly.

If the heatsink isnt getting up around 70C (hot to the touch) when prime is running, you probably have poor contact.

Make sure you feel closer to the base of the heatsink, near the CPU.

Can the heat difference be due to the heatsink not being able to transfer the heat fast enough from the base to the fins?

cause under light loads its fine... i will check how hot the base of the heatsink gets when i finish work, if it is hot then its probably the heatpipes not doing a good enough job.

That would only be the case if the base was hot and top was still cold.

I remounted the heat sink using different clips and it seems to have helped a bit. Also mounted a second fan on the sonic tower in the middle which made a difference.
Now my load temps are:
Core 1&2 70C
Core 3&4 68C

Hi! I'm also thinking about mounting old Sonic Tower on P35-DQ6 and Q6600 so let me ask if you had any problems with this setup? There are 4 heatsinks on the board already, did they make any difference?
What temps do get on stock clock?
