New System...Overclocking Ideas?

I am in need of a new system for college and I have put together a few ideas. I would really like to be able to overlock the machine to hopefully 2.8GHZ or maybe more...but I don't want to have to fill my machine full of irritating fans that blow @ 9000RPM and make it sound like I am at an airport rather than a dorm room. I guess my main question is what CPU to go with, the P4 2.26 or 2.4B? I am guessing the 2.4B would overlcok better with better RAM due to the higher multiplier...but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHZ Processor: 389.00
Epox 4G4A+ Pentium 4 Motherboard: 116.63
Leadtek A250TD Ultra Geforce4 Ti 4600 128MB DDR Video Card: 307.00
512MB Mushkin PC3000 DDR RAM: 174.00
Western Digital 80GB UDMA100 7200RPM Hard Drive: 97.00
Lite-On 40/12/48 CD-RW Drive: 66.00
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy: 60.00
Samsung 181T-B 18.1? LCD Monitor: 866.95
Antec SX1040B Full Tower Case w/400W PS: 123.00
Sunon Case Fan: 5.00
Sony 1.44MB floppy Drive: 8.00
Viewsonic Slim Keyboard: 35.00
Rounded Cables: 52.50
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer: 31.00
Swiftech MCX478 Pentium 4 Cooler: 66.00
Altec Lansing ATP3 3 Piece Speaker System: 56.47
Microsoft Office XP Professional: 179.00
Microsoft Windows XP Professional w/Microsoft Plus: 142.00

The total cost shipped is 2884.22 or 2765.41 w/ the 2.26 P4

I am going to mainly use this for Light DV Editing, Gaming (Ureal 2 and UT2K3!!!), Office/School Apps, and Internet stuff...thanks.

BTW, I already have one 80GB 7200RPM Drive and will be putting both of those in a RAID config, and I also already have a 3Com Gigabyte NIC and a Toshiba 16X/48X DVD-ROM

Actually, the 2.26B would be the better choice since it has a lower multiplier. This means you can run a higher FSB speed at the same CPU speed, improving overall performance.

And even if you don't hit the same speed as with the 2.4, with the increased fsb it would run faster anyways! I would have to agree about getting the 2.26B. You may even want to take a look at some of the A chips for instance one guy recently got his speed up to 3ghz on the 1.8A. Either way good luck!

I would wait for the Intel Sept 1st price cuts. You will save about $80 off current prices for the 2.26b, even more for the 2.4.

I've seen how the prices are going to go down soon, so this is most likely temporary, buy something now because I need it...overclock it and hopefully get a good result, if not, sell and buy a new chip. So with the 2.26B, what FSB, VCore settings..etc., etc. should I be looking at. Does anyone have any experience with a setup similar to this? I read another thread on the forums about how a guy with a 2.26B could only hit 2.44 w/4G4A+....but on the overlockers.com database I saw quite a few hitting 2.6GHZ+ with them. I just want a good chip, for a good overclock.

You know something we don't? I know the prices will drop on the 1st but I don't know the amounts.

Umm the prices are going down in like 33 days. Can't you wait that long?

I suppose it's possible, but let's see, classes start the 18th, and price cuts are the 1st of Sept., hmmmmmm, might need a computer for that two and a half weeks. nd besides, I'm not very patient.

Well don't you have the system you are writting in this forum on? But heck the price drops won't be drastic really and I guess its up to you 😉 Just don't blame me if they drop 50% and you mad you didn't wait!
