new system, os and file transfer

Building a new system. Is it an OK idea to use a utility to just transfer the old HDD contents to a new one, and then place it into new system, or will there be problems? I understand I will have to uninstall/reinstall hardware, but wonder if Windows will be OK too. Hoping to avoid alot of reinstalling of software.

Going from PII350/acer AX6BC, probably to PIII800/ASUS CUSL2-C. Using Win98SE. Any help and opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

Sometimes just deleting the HKLM\Enum key in the Registry will work for removing the devices and getting Windows to redetect in the new system to avoid a full reinstall.

Personally, I prefer a full reinstall because it gets rid of OS bloat/rot, and it avoids possible problems and conflicts caused by left over drivers and various Registry keys floating around. The new install will be leaner, faster and properly tailored to your new system.
